President
Hey! I’m Matt Greenwaldt, and I am a fourth-year student and the AIChE OSU President this year. As president, I give oversight to my amazing team of board members and serve as the main point of contact for AIChE’s professional contacts, advisors, and the national AIChE organization. I wanted to be president of AIChE because I’ve seen and myself experienced the doors that AIChE can open for students and the amazing people we can meet and learn from at Ohio State both professionally and socially, and I want to ensure that students coming through the chemical engineering department have even better opportunities to grow, network, and enjoy their time at college well into the future. I think AIChE can continuously improve with this mission, and I am incredibly proud to lead such a great team of dedicated chemical engineers to improve the ChemE experience!
My Experiences
At OSU I have had several diverse research experiences within the CBE department. I first worked with the Dr. Chalmers Laboratory for Cell Analysis and Separation the summer and fall after my freshman year (SU18-AU18) helping my graduate student perform magnetic cell separation and developing faster data processing using my Matlab skills from FEH. The next summer and fall (SU19-AU19) I worked with the Dr. L.-S. Fan Clean Energy Research Laboratory’s simulations group to optimize the conditions for running their natural gas to hydrogen conversion system on ASPEN.
I have previously served as the AIChE OSU Treasurer in AU19 and Mentorship Chair in AU18-SP19 as well, and I really loved both getting involved with mentors and mentees and becoming familiar with the financial side of the organization on those terms! I’ve also had the pleasure of mentoring those who have followed me into those positions, just like how those who came before me mentored me.
Interning in industry for the first time, I worked for LyondellBasell as a production/process engineering co-op at their Channelview, TX site in Spring 2020, and I enjoyed getting my first taste of what chemical engineering after graduation might be like and working with full-time process engineers to approach issues like maximizing throughput, improving separation, and reducing emissions. I then spent six weeks in Summer 2020 working as a CCDS Decontamination Technician at Battelle’s Austin, TX CCDS site decontaminating N95 masks for frontline healthcare workers and firefighters around the city. I then returned to LyondelBasell as a production/process engineering co-op at their Lake Charles, LA site and gained experience with the plastics production side of the company.
My Hobbies
I love to listen to music; it’s rare you will ever find me without headphones in when I’m doing work or just chilling on my own. I like rap and R&B the most, and I’ve also had a special passion for a wide array of electronic music. I’m a big fan of creating playlists (for myself and for others!) and going to shows to hear the artists I love in person as well! As for staying active, I run and lift weights on the day-to-day, which has kept me centered in the crazy bustle of being an involved ChemE student. I’m a huge skiing fan (I made the trip of a lifetime to Jackson Hole, WY recently with the OSU Ski & Board team), and I love to play tennis and hike with my friends. I also enjoy reading and playing video games, have extremely strict tastes for good NY-style pizza, and have an everlasting desire for good memes.
