During Spring of 1984, Several students attending a Hispanic leadership retreat noted a need for Latino organizations at The Ohio State University. An exploratory group, led by Dr. Josue Cruz, Assistant Vice Provost to the Office of Minority Affairs, was formed to research possible fraternities and sororities. After reviewing their findings, the group decided to start a new Latino Greek organization. As a result of this, on February 11, 1985 Alpha Psi Lambda National Fraternity, Inc. was established at The Ohio State University as a safe space for Latinx and Hispanic students alike.

Our founding mothers and fathers, Diana Acevedo, Juan Casimiro, Carolyn Christian, James Cordero, Tammy Harris, Clara Isern, Marisol Lugo, Yolanda Natal, Saddy Rivera, Nancy Romo, Annette Saldivar, Annette Seda, and Juan Vera, has paved the way to allow our familia to continue to grow on not only Ohio State’s campus, but on many others throughout the country. Through the continual efforts from our hermanos y hermanas, Alpha Psi Lambda thrives on college campuses by providing a familia and a space for advocacy. Our members recognize a need for education and cohesion for Latinx communities on many college campuses.

Today, Alpha Psi Lambda has grown to include 36 collegiate Chapters and 6 Affiliate Chapters with over 3,400 members. It is the Nation’s First and Largest Co-ed Latino Fraternity.
