Think Tank

  • We are working on identifying new projects to take on in the upcoming years. Please fill out this quick form if you haven’t already to help us find projects that you all will be passionate about!

Carrying Solutions

  • Carrying Solutions has spent a ton of time refining the questions they plan on asking to the people at the Open Shelter.
    • Finding out exactly what they want will save everyone tons of time, effort, and money. Tailoring the questions to cover all of our bases while still being accessible has been the target, a relatively tough task.
  • They are also refining one of the last unknowns of the reworked design, the handlebars. They’re focused on finding the perfect balance of durability, ergonomics, and ease of fabrication.  There are some really promising designs developed in SolidWorks and we’re excited to see what the Open Shelter thinks of it.

Creative Living

  • The Creative Living team has completed their solution for their teacher project, shown below.
  • Creative Living is working on creating a final design concept for Andrew’s assistive, rock climbing gear. They have created a materials list and are each creating 3D models of hook shapes to test in the future.

Meeting Reminder

  • See you on Thursdays at 6:00 pm on Microsoft Teams!
  • Don’t forget to attend our guest speaker presentation on April 8th.

February 2021 Updates

Compost Tea

  • Started putting together our educational video series for the community garden.
    • Compost 101 video that explains the what, when, where, why, who of compost, and the types of compost.
  • Soon we will also be beginning our compost tea efficacy testing.

Think Tank

  • Met with representatives from Clovernook Center for the Blind as well as Nationwide Children’s to discuss two potential projects to take on next year! Now we are working on building out and collecting background information for these projects so next year’s teams can hit the ground running.

Carrying Solutions

  • Our concept screening and scoring revealed that we need to focus more on increasing our ability to traverse tough terrain and to lower cost/difficulty in production. Therefore, we have been focusing on a few new and improved design concepts. We have been working on conceptual designs, including some SolidWorks modeling to vet some of these new design concepts.
  • Have been trying to organize with the Open Shelter to get feedback on our most recent designs from people who are homeless. We are hoping that after this round of critiques from people who are homeless, we will feel confident constructing a prototype of our carrying solution.

Creative Living

  • Creative Living has brainstormed approximately 100 concepts for our rock-climbing assistive device. This past week, we began screening ideas to move forward with for our final design using a decision matrix.

Think Tank

  • The goal for Think Tank this semester is to secure one project for next fall hopefully and then identify at least one more potential organization to partner with for next year’s group to contact.

Preschool Solar Panel

  • Last semester we completed calculations for the size of all the necessary components of the solar system (solar panels, batteries, inverter, and charge controller).
  • Now we are working on deciding the type and brand of each component that will make up the final system. We are comparing the types of components to find the ones that will work best for the size and usage patterns of this solar system. We will then look for components that fit within our budget and can be integrated together to make the complete system.
  • By the end of the semester, we hope to finish selecting the components and to be working on designing the structure that will attach the panels to the roof of the preschool.

Carrying Solutions

  • This semester we have picked right back up with where we left off.  We finished creating and performing analysis through a Pairwise Comparison Chart and Concept Screening Matrix.  We are going to be spending the coming weeks gaining a better understanding of what the data means and how we can use it to improve our design(s).  In general, we are going to continue making our design concepts more robust by addressing our lowest scoring categories on our screening matrix.
  • Additionally, we are reaching out to the Open Shelter to seek potential volunteering opportunities for the coming semester.

Creative Living

  • The Creative Living team has completed their Debbie project, for the time being. Our final prototype is shown below.
  • We are currently working with Creative Living to find an individual to test and provide feedback on the design. This week, we are meeting with Andrew to begin our next project with Creative Living involving an assistive rock climbing device

Preschool Solar Panel

  • Created a spreadsheet with various input settings and variables that can be used to determine the required power of the solar panel and Amp-hours of the battery for a given load.
    • In the future, the Preschool Solar Panel team will be getting more specific in determining how many batteries, the type of inverter needed, and other various parameters. We will also be looking at pictures of the preschool to help with the big picture and assist with future decisions

Home Solar Panel

  • Planned the organization and documentation of project progress files and goals
  • Finished the calculations for a theoretical solar panel selection so there is a basis on how to choose the most useful and efficient panel

    • Reached preliminary conclusions on a lot of core components
      • Aluminum Square tubing as a frame structure is looking particularly attractive at its price point and strength
      • Figuring out the base material of the cart is going to be hard work but we’re trying our best to find good solutions, currently looking at using wood
      • Chose tarp for the GreenHouse Weave material
    • Began the process of scoring matrix
  • Design team
    • Discussion on the different levels of shelter required; the main thing we are working on is how to attach the arms and how they would function.
    • Created the Pairwise comparison function in order to weight the rating when scoring the Pugh matrix
    • Started making the Pugh matrix, thinking about other alternate designs that we could put head to head against the current design
      • The team will continue working on this next week

Creative Living

  • Creative Living is working on final deliverable documents to provide along with the final prototype. This will include a description of the purpose of the device, instructions for creation and assembly, and ideas for customization.
    • We were recently informed that Debbie, from Creative Living who we were working with to create our grasping project, has passed away. We are continuing the project in her remembrance in order to help others with her disability.
  • Next week, we are meeting with a contact from Creative Living to discuss future projects and reinforce our relationship. We are hoping to finish the grasping project by the end of the semester and begin an assistive rock-climbing device for Andrew in the Spring.

Compost Tea

  • Compost tea is looking for options next semester to complete testing indoors. Along with that, we are trying to reach out to some community gardens to figure out how we might be able to volunteer come springtime.
