First-generation college students are those whose parent(s) or legal guardian(s) have not completed a bachelor’s degree at a four year college or university. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, in 2010 34% of Vietnamese, 43% of Cambodians, 47% of Laotian, and 48% of Hmong adults over the age of 25 do not have a high school diploma or equivalent. Challenges like limited english proficiency, low-income neighborhoods, lack of SE Asian American educators, and limited parent engagement in their children’s education contribute to low educational attainment rates. Asian American first generation college student face numerous barriers to academic success, but they aren’t alone. On Tuesday, Feb. 6th the Khmer Student Association will present a conversation/workshop to support and guide those that are interested in learning more about the struggles we have gone through as first generation students. If you’re not a first generation student please feel free to join in the conversation to see a contrast between our experiences. College can be an intimidating place for everyone!
For the first half of our general body meetings we will be adding a workshop like the first generation conversation. Then we will get into our work for our Khmer New Year event. Everyone is welcome to attend both!
