Fashion Highlight: Lana Del Rey’s Fashion Evolution

As Lana Del Rey prepares to headline the Lollapalooza Music Festival in Chicago this year, it is time to take a look at the singer’s most iconic fashion moments since her breakout in 2011.

The singer, who was born as Lizzy Grant, has always had a style all her own, being seen at events in anything from a custom Gucci gown to a $18 minidress she bought online, Del Rey has always been unapologetically herself.

Del Rey once dubbed her style as a “Gangsta Nancy Sinatra” but as W Magazine puts it, “she’s more of a cross between sultry, glamourous Priscilla Presley and casual California cool girl.”

2011: The Q Awards

The 2011 Q Awards was one of Del Rey’s first major appearances since her breakout and she was seen wearing a leather biker jacket with a floral Prabal Gurung resort 2012 dress as she accepted the award for “Next Big Thing.”

2012: BRIT Awards

In 2012, Del Rey matched her red hair to an off-the-shoulder Vivienne Westwood gown as she attended the BRIT Awards.

2012: Echo Awards

During the 2012 Echo Awards, Del Rey was seen wearing an icy blue Giorgio Armani spring 2012 gown, paired with a pair of ballet flats and her cellphone in hand.

2012: Impossible Conversations Met Gala

Del Rey attended her first Met Gala in a silver, hand-embroidered Altuzarra gown, which she wore with a black, silk cape.

2013: Golden Globes Party

Del Rey became a trendsetter at the 2013 Golden Globes Party, wearing a white suit featuring oversized trousers.

2013: BRIT Awards

Del Rey attended the 2013 BRIT Awards in a retro-chic Chanel shirt dress, opting for a more casual look.

2013: Cannes Film Festival

Del Rey took a break from big brands to rep the designer Lena Hoschek for the festival premiere of the 2013 film, “The Great Gatsby,” for which Del Rey had written a song for.

2015: Golden Globe Awards

Del Rey attended the 2015 Golden Globe Awards in a pleated turquoise gown designed by Decades.

2016: Vanity Fair Oscar Party

One of Del Rey’s most iconic and most elegant looks came from the 2016 Vanity Fair Oscar Party, where she wore a silver Vivienne Westwood, sleeved gown.

2017: Europe Music Awards

Enter, the Gucci era. Del Rey has always been known for her custom Gucci looks, which first began with this look from the 2017 Europe Music Awards. She wore a floral gown from the brand’s 2017 fall collection which included an intricate butterfly across the front.

2018: Grammy Awards

Del Rey attended the 2018 Grammys in none other than Gucci, wearing an embellished ivory gown with a star-adorned headpiece.

2018: Heavenly Bodies: Fashion & The Catholic Imagination Met Gala

Del Rey’s most iconic look comes from the 2018 Met Gala which she attended with Jared Leto and then-Gucci creative director Alessandro Michele. The singer wore a Gucci dress inspired by Our Lady of Sorrows with intricate details like the heart and swords metal piece and blue winged headpiece.

2018: LACMA Art + Film Gala

And again, Del Rey attended the 2018 LACMA Awards in a custom Gucci gown, channeling a bit of Madonna in a black gown with fingerless gloves.

2020: Pre-Grammy Gala

Del Rey attended the Pre-Grammy Gala looking more elegant than ever in a custom gown from Redemption.

2020: Grammy Awards

Unlike her custom Pre-Grammy Gala look, Del Rey attended the Grammy Awards in a silver, beaded Aidan Matrix dress which she had bought at the mall ahead of the ceremony.

“I had another dress, and then my boyfriend and I were getting a belt for him at the mall and I saw this and I loved it,” the singer told Entertainment Tonight on the red carpet.

2021: Variety Hitmakers Brunch

It wasn’t long after the 2021 Variety Hitmakers Brunch that fans found this green patterned dress for just $18 online.

2023: Billboard Women in Music

Del Rey attended the 2023 event in a pale yellow paisley Zimmerman resort 2023 dress with floral fringe adorning the hem and sleeves, one of Del Rey’s most extravagant looks.

Fashion Highlight: A Breakdown of Each of Taylor Swift’s Eras

Fashion Highlight: A Breakdown of Each of Taylor Swift’s Eras

With Taylor Swift’s “Eras Tour” in full swing, there is no better time to break down each era. Everything from the fashion to the Billboard standings, here’s a look at each of Swift’s eras, from “Taylor Swift”  in 2006 to her latest album, “Midnights,” in 2022.

The “Taylor Swift” Era

The “Taylor Swift” era, also commonly given the title, “the debut era,” represents Swift’s self-titled country album that first brought her into the spotlight.

The album was released in 2006 and had five singles, including “Tim McGraw,” which spent eight months on the Billboard country singles chart.

This era is often defined by a sense of innocence. During this time, Swift was best known for her curly hair, acoustic guitar and cowboy boots.

Although Swift didn’t tour for this album, she did open for many other country artists and left her mark on the country music industry. By the end of the debut era, Swift had won the CMA’s best new artist award in November of 2007.

The “Fearless” Era

Nov. 11, 2008 marked the beginning of Swift’s second era with the release of her second album, “Fearless.” This album was the start of Swift’s transition into the world of pop, being labeled as a country-pop album.

This era quickly became even more successful than “Taylor Swift,” becoming No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart and winning album of the year at the Grammys in 2010. This era also has its own tour, which started in April of 2009 and lasted for over a year.

Throughout the tour Swift was still defined by her long, curly hair but now her acoustic guitar had been covered in rhinestones.

In April 2021, Swift re-released “Fearless” as “Fearless (Taylor’s Version)” in order to own the master recordings of the album.

The “Speak Now” Era

Swift’s third era, the “Speak Now” era, marks her third album, which was released on Oct. 25, 2010. It was in this era that Swift started including songs that alluded to her public relationships, something that has become a staple to her songwriting.

The album sold a million copies within its first week and spent six weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. This era also had its own tour that began in February 2011 and ended in March 2012, Swift still rocking her blonde curls and innocent style.

The “Red” Era

The release of Swift’s fourth album, “Red,” on Oct. 22, 2012, made a more noticeable transition from country to pop.

There were seven singles released from the album, including “I Knew You Were Trouble,” “Red,” “22,” and “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together.” The album spent seven weeks at the top of the Billboard 200, making Swift the first female to have three consecutive albums each spend six weeks at No. 1.

During the album’s tour, which began in March of 2013, Swift’s iconic curls had disappeared and the guitar appeared less. It was during this era that we first saw Swift’s iconic red lipstick.

On Nov. 12, 2021, Swift re-released “Red” as “Red (Taylor’s Version),” which included nine “from the vault” tracks, including “All Too Well (10 minute version) [Taylor’s Version].”

The “1989” Era

Swift’s fifth era, with the release of “1989” on Oct. 27, 2024, officially marked an end to Swift’s country music career and made a full transition into the world of pop music.

During Swift’s “1989” tour came a complete transition from curly hair and cowboy boots to a long bob with bodysuits.

The album’s clear move away from country influences was very apparent in songs like, “Welcome to New York” and “Shake It Off”  that had a focus on life in a big city.

“1989 (Taylor’s Version)” as an album has yet to be released, the single “Wildest Dreams” is the only song to have been re-released.

The “Reputation” Era

After drama between Swift and rapper Kanye West, which led to Swift removing herself from the public eye and social media, Swift returned to the public, releasing her sixth album, “Reputation,” on Nov. 10, 2017.

“Look What You Made Me Do,” the lead single of the album, was the first single Swift had released in three years.

This era had taken a darker turn, in sound, lyrics and overall appearance. The album and its tour featured darker colors and lots of snake imagery and Swift’s iconic red lipstick had been traded in for darker colors.

“Reputation” was the last album Swift recorded with Big Machine Records and will be the last to be re-recorded as “Reputation (Taylor’s Version).”

The “Lover” Era

“Lover,” Swift’s seventh album, was released on Aug. 23, 2018 with only four singles released from the album.

A complete turn around from Swift’s dark wardrobe during the “Reputation” tour, “Lover” featured many pastel colors and Swift even dyed her blonde hair to a pastel pink color.

The “Lover” tour, given the name “Lover” fest by fans, was scheduled to begin in 2020 but was eventually cancelled due to COVID-19. On Sept. 9, 2019, Swift held a concert in Paris, called “City of Lover,” making that performance the only live performance from Swift’s “Lover” era.

The “Folklore/Evermore” Era

Many fans consider the releases of “Folklore” and “Evermore” to be one era because of the similarities between the two albums, both in overall aesthetic and the style of the music.

As alluded to in the title, “Folklore’s” musical style leaned towards folk and both the covers for “Folklore” and “Evermore” showed Swift wearing fall clothes, walking through the woods.

“Folklore” was released on July 24, 2020 and later that same year “Evermore” was released on Dec. 11, 2020. Both albums were surprise releases, with no singles being released before the release of each album.

The “Midnights” Era

Swift’s most recent era, the “Midnights” era, stems from the release of her tenth album, “Midnights,” which was released on Oct. 21, 2022.

“Midnights” is made up of Swift’s nocturnal creations, essentially her experiences with midnights. This era uses lots of night imagery and marks Swift’s return to pop.

Movie Review: Barbie is Everything, He’s Just Ken

Movie Review: Barbie is Everything, He’s Just Ken

For many fans, Greta Gerwig’s highly anticipated Barbie movie did not disappoint, bringing Stereotypical Barbie (Margot Robbie), Stereotypical Ken (Ryan Gosling), and all their friends to life as they discover how the real world operates much differently from Barbieland.

All these Barbies and Kens have ever known is pink perfection in their Mattel-created world that is full of dream houses and dancing. Stereotypical Barbie’s day takes a turn for the worse as she starts experiencing thoughts of death, flat feet, and cellulite among other impurities from her perfect way of life.

She seeks out Weird Barbie (Kate McKinnon) for advice which leads her to travel to the real world and find the child playing with her. Once in the real world, specifically Los Angeles, Barbie discovers she is out of place and that the patriarchal society Barbie sought to prevent was very real. While she searches for her child and finds pre-tween Sasha (Ariana Greenblatt) who criticizes Barbie for setting unrealistic beauty standards, Ken learns of the power and influence men hold in the real world and returns to Barbieland to inform the other Kens. Word gets to Mattel that one of their Barbies is roaming the real world and they begin to hunt her down to return her to Barbieland.

On the run from Mattel, Barbie is saved by Sasha and her mother, Gloria (America Ferrera), and they return to Barbieland together. Meanwhile the Kens have taken over Barbieland, imposing patriarchal society from the real world. Barbie feels defeated but after encouragement from Sasha, Gloria, Weird Barbie, and other discontinued Barbies, they all team up to free the brain-washed Barbies from the influence of Kendom.

Barbie is known for having many different well-distinguished careers and achievements. Many of the Barbies’ outfits in the movie are representative of Barbie’s many career dolls over the years. Classic Barbie, on the other hand, has many motifs like pink seashells, hearts, gingham prints, and the letter ‘B,’ which dominated her wardrobe.

One thing that stood out was the use of big and oversized accessories throughout the movie, including headwear and jewelry. The use of these accessories creates a sense that Robbie is in fact a life size doll.

While the Barbies’ fashion speaks for itself, the Kens dressed in very similar outfits throughout the film. This is no mistake, many Barbie dolls over the years have had very different styles, careers and hobbies, while Ken has been left with the same wardrobe and personality for many years. But there is one exception to the male dominated Kendom, Allan (Michael Cera). Allan was a discontinued doll created by Mattel, marketed as “Ken’s Buddy” and as they say in the film, “there is only one Allan.” This is why Gerwig made the decision to dress Cera in Allan’s only ever outfit.

Barbieland creates nostalgia with similarities to the Barbie products Mattel has created in real life. The Barbies’ set, dream houses and decor are modeled after real products. Architectural Digest shows a behind-the-scenes tour of Barbie’s Dream House with Margot Robbie, in which Robbie shows the audience many details of the dream house, including the detail that some of the home’s decor is 2-dimensional, consistent with many other Barbie set products.

After the Kens took over Barbieland the Barbies’ bright-colored unique outfits were swapped for black and white maid outfits and other generally less conservative clothing signifying their role in the patriarchy. The Kens also changed their looks and donned western aesthetic looks as Ken’s impression of patriarchy in the real world was seeing policemen riding horses through the streets. Many Kens ditched their shirts in their looks at this point to assert their dominance. Their new outfits were completed with horse motifs, leather fringe, and lots of bling.

Weird Barbie is a character whose fashion was particularly interesting. It is explained in the movie that Weird Barbie is delegated to the Barbie who was played with too much. We all remember that one Barbie that would get haircuts and new makeup thanks to a box markers.

Weird Barbie’s child has drawn on her face, dress, and styled her hair differently. She is seen later in the movie wearing patchwork pants and makeshift tin foil elbow pads. This relays a DIY aspect of Barbie that children can undertake by making her homemade clothes and otherwise altering her appearance.

The marketing and promotion for the movie didn’t lack in any area. In the opening scene of the film, Barbie perfectly steps out of her heels, which was recreated by clothing brands advertising Barbie collaboration shoes, among others. And shoes are just the beginning when it comes to Barbie brand collaborations ahead of the movie premiere. Beis, Alex and Ani, Burger King, Crocs, NYX Cosmetics, and PacSun are just a few of the brands that have released exclusive Barbie collaboration products leading up to the premiere of the film. The brand Mattel additionally released a new line of dolls, accessories, games, and toys styled to match those from the movie.

The movie’s notable soundtrack includes tracks like “Dance the Night” by Dua Lipa, and “Barbie World” by Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice. The latter two especially used personal branding to promote Barbie with their song and fashion leading up to the movie release.

The cast’s international press tour was also a huge promotional force for the movie. Check out Scarlette’s blog about Margot Robbie’s tour outfits that replicate those of real Barbie dolls.

Beauty and Bliss: Discover Winky Lux’s Best Selling Products

Beauty and Bliss: Discover Winky Lux’s Best Selling Products

In a world where sustainability has become a necessity and the words like “clean” and “cruelty free” have become overused, finding a brand that lives up to its promises has become a challenge. I am always searching for skincare and makeup products that are true to their word, being both cruelty free and sustainable, is something that has become very important to me.

In 2015, longtime friends Natalie Mackey and Nate Newman founded Winky Lux. Their original goal was to bring fun to everyday beauty rituals, introducing products like flower and glitter filled lip balms that were both beautiful and functional. Since then, Winky Lux has expanded to be sold in many stores including Target and Ulta and is constantly striving for new levels of sustainability.

With help from rePurpose Global, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping companies become plastic neutral, meaning for every amount of plastic used there is an equal amount of plastic being recycled, Winky Lux has proven its commitment to becoming a clean and cruelty free beauty line as well as actively working to become sustainable by becoming plastic neutral.

Here are some of the brand’s most popular products. Click on the product title to purchase each product on the Winky Lux website.

The reason I love this product so much is because it’s both a tinted moisturizer and a sunscreen, with SPF 30 that is perfect for the summer. The moisturizer has a slight tint that blends well into the skin providing a lightweight finish, leaving the skin feeling both beautiful and hydrated. The creamy textured moisturizer contains nourishing ingredients such as white tea extracts, pomegranates and vitamin E to give your skin a beautiful healthy glow. The moisturizer is available in a wide range of diverse colors to fit every skin tone.

This viral under eye concealer lives up to the hype. Packed with super ingredients like collagen, hyaluronic acid, glycerin and vitamin E, this concealer does more than cover, it’ll help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and helps to cover dark under-eye circles.

Not only is this lip balm beautiful, but it’s also vegan. The balm is unique in many ways, but in particular because it uses your PH to transform your lips into the beautiful shade of pink with a slight shimmer that is uniquely perfect to each and every person. It’s also made with ceramides that helps to provide lasting hydration.

The Detail Oriented Mascara is by far one of my favorite Winky Lux products. The name speaks for itself. The micro-spoolie catches all your lashing from corner to corner, ensuring detail delivering volume, length and definition for your lashes. The best part of this product is that it helps comb through all of your lashes preventing clumping that can happen with many other mascaras.

No more spending hours in the makeup aisle trying to find the perfect shade to match your eyebrows. Like its name this universal brow pencil is designed to blend with almost every brow shade. The firm pencil provides perfect precision that gives you total control over your brows. For lighter shades, use a light pressure and for darker shades use a heavier pressure to cater to your needs. Say goodbye to frustrating time-consuming applications and create a flawless brow in minutes for any occasion.

The Barbies that Inspired Margot Robbie’s Barbie Movie Press Tour Wardrobe

The Barbies that Inspired Margot Robbie’s Barbie Movie Press Tour Wardrobe

When Margot Robbie signed on to bring Barbie to life, she meant it in more ways than one.

Robbie, with help from her stylist Andrew Mukamal, has created an entire Barbie themed wardrobe for the press tour of Greta Gerwig’s upcoming Barbie movie. The film is set to release on July 21 and Robbie has spent the past few months travelling around the world to promote the film.

Robbie has embraced her inner Barbie in every sense of the word, dressing like a different version of the iconic doll for each stop of the film’s press tour. Everything from the original Teenage Fashion Model Barbie from 1959 to the most recent Barbie Movie Barbie from 2023, it’s every girl’s dream wardrobe and Robbie executed it perfectly.

Here is a look at every Barbie doll that has inspired Robbie’s press tour wardrobe.

Barbie Movie Barbie (2023)

Ever since the Quick Curl Barbie in 1973, baby pink gingham has been a staple to Barbie’s wardrobe and Greta Gerwig did not forget that.

After the release of the Barbie movie trailer in May, fans noticed this obvious reference to Barbie’s iconic pattern and Robbie made sure to include it in her own Barbie wardrobe.

On April 25 Robbie attended CinemaCon in Las Vegas wearing a two-piece Prada bra and miniskirt in the iconic Barbie baby pink gingham pattern — the perfect tribute to Gerwig’s version of the iconic doll but with a modern twist.

Pink and Fabulous Barbie (2015)

Beverly Hills marked the beginning of the official Barbie movie press tour and Robbie did not disappoint.

Everything, form the yellow shoulder bag to the white heels, was a nod to the 2015 Pink and Fabulous Barbie.

The polka-dot mini dress, designed by Valentino, although having a different fit from the original look, was a perfect representation of being both pink and fabulous.

Teenage Fashion Model Barbie (1959)

The next stop on Robbie’s press tour, her native country of Australia, marked one of the tour’s most iconic looks.

Being that this stop was at Bondi Beach, it would only be appropriate to wear a look inspired by Barbie’s most iconic swimsuit. Robbie wore a black-and-white striped Hérve Léger bandage dress, representing the 1959 Teenage Fashion Model Barbie.

Although Barbie is best known for wearing pink dresses and heels, Teenage Fashion Model Barbie, the original Barbie, wore a black-and-white striped swimsuit with a perfectly-placed high pony and Robbie made sure to include every detail. The look couldn’t be complete without the iconic white cat-eye sunglasses with blue lenses and a pair of patent leather peep-toe mules and to finish it off Robbie even included the red nail polish as a final detail.

Day-to-Night Barbie (1985)

But sometimes, one look just isn’t enough. In Seoul, Korea, Robbie wore two different looks for her press tour appearance, but the outfits weren’t from two different Barbies.

The Day-to-Night Barbie from 1985 was one doll, sold with two different outfits, a day look for Barbie to go to work in and a pink dress for Barbie to go party in at night.

Both of Robbie’s versions of the looks were designed by Versace to be a perfect lookalike to the 1985 doll. Mukamal and Robbie even went the extra mile, bedazzling a faux 1980s phone as an accessory.

Sparkling Pink Barbie (1964)

Robbie’s look for a press conference in Seoul, Korea, unlike some of the other looks from the tour, was a modern take on an iconic Barbie look, rather than an exact replication.

The two-piece hot pink rhinestone embroidered dress, designed by Moschino, did include some obvious nods to the 1964 Sparkling Pink Barbie, with details like the cropped jacket and the iconic Jackie O, pillbox hat, along with the addition of a quilted heart-shaped leather bag to complete the look.

Earring Magic Barbie (1992)

On July 6, for the Naucalpan de Juarez premiere in Mexico, Robbie wore a hot pink Balmain mini dress with the added details of a silver chain belt and matching earrings, both weighed down with star charms.

The look represents the 1992 Earring Magic Barbie, and although Robbie decided to opt out of the poofy, crimped hair, the dress did all the work and it did not disappoint.

Totally Hair Barbie (1992)

Following the Naucalpan de Juarez premiere, Robbie attended a photo call in Mexico and decided to stick with the 90s theme, channelling the 1992 Totally Hair Barbie, in an Emilio Pucci mini dress.

And you can’t be the Totally Hair Barbie without having crimped, waist-length hair and hot pink earrings to tie the whole look together.

Solo in the Spotlight Barbie (1960)

Robbie returned to California on July 9 for the Los Angeles premiere, wearing her most extravagant Barbie look yet.

The look, representing the 1960 Solo in the Spotlight Barbie, was defined by a custom creation from Schiaparelli’s Daniel Roseberry, a black strapless couture dress with a tulle hem, completed with a hand-painted rose attached to the dress’ hem.

The look represents the first doll of the brand’s “career” Barbies and couldn’t have been completed without the iconic pale pink handkerchief, black opera gloves and layered diamond necklace.

Enchanted Evening Barbie (1960)

Last, but not least, Robbie went all out for the London premiere, wearing a custom Vivienne Westwood gown representing the 1960 Enchanted Evening Barbie.

The recreation was perfect, down to every detail, from the rosette hip attachment to the three-strand pearl choker.

The only deviation from the iconic look was in Robbie’s hairstyle. Rather than micro-bangs and a ponytail, Robbie wore a 90s chignon with two wispy pieces framing her face. But there are no complaints with a gown that stunning.
