Dress to Impress: A Guide to Summer Internship Fashion

Dress to Impress: A Guide to Summer Internship Fashion

As the school year ends and summer begins, internships are right around the corner. That means it is time to start preparing a wardrobe that allows you to share your individuality while also dressing to impress in the workplace.

When thinking about internship fashion it is important to build a foundation of basics like dress pants and blazers so you know what accessories you should keep an eye out for.

Regardless of whether your internship leans towards a creative or conservative field, a black tailored blazer allows you to look sophisticated with minimal effort. A black blazer is a perfect layering piece and goes with nearly everything, but that doesn’t mean you need to restrict yourself to owning only a black blazer, there are many different colors and styles available that allow you to add more dimension and color to your outfit.

Another must have to consider is a simple button up. A white button up can act as a blank canvas for you to layer and accessorize with that allows you to express yourself while still looking professional. When you start with a white button up the possibilities are endless, you could add some fun to the look with a statement necklace, colorful blazer, an appropriate sweater or a funky vest.

One great thing about a button up is that you can find them everywhere for affordable prices, but remember, it is also important to find one that fits correctly and is comfortable since you will be wearing the shirt the whole work day.

A pair of black pumps is a must when it comes to dressing up for the workplace. Pumps are a perfect way for you to look professional and they add some personality to your look since there are countless amounts of outfits that pumps can be paired with.

Investing in a good pair of pumps provides you with dress shoes if you are ever given the opportunity to attend an event or professional meeting. However, it could never hurt to have a pair of flats around since it is also important to prioritize your comfort and make sure that you are able to walk comfortably around the workplace.

Jewelry is a statement piece that anyone could benefit from having, since the perfect accessory can make the look standout in a crowd. Adding a few statement rings and necklaces can make a boring, neutral outfit look more unique.

You could also consider purchasing a few hair accessories that can help you combat a “woke up on the wrong side of the bed” kind of day.

Some suggestions include claw clips and some gold barrettes to help keep your hair tamed and out of your face.

When buying or selecting accessories for your outfit refrain from selecting items that are too trendy and aren’t workplace appropriate, it is always important to look as professional as possible.

Last but not least, makeup. Makeup is a very important mention when it comes to completing your look. When doing your makeup it is best to play it safe since you will be placed in a professional setting. A suggestion would be to keep your makeup neutral, use lots of nudes and tans, but there is room to be bold with lipstick choices.

You can achieve this neutral look by adding some BB cream, blush and neutral eyeshadow to any look.

Unleashing your Style with Aubrey Jai: The Boldly Fashionable Vegan Bag Brand

Unleashing your Style with Aubrey Jai: The Boldly Fashionable Vegan Bag Brand

Sustainability is one of the most talked about topics right now, but it is especially relevant in the fashion industry and has become the forefront in consumer’s decisions in buying fashion. One of the hottest topics right now in the handbag market is the idea of trading in animal leathers for vegan leathers, which are cruelty free and more sustainable for the planet.

In the past few years, many brands have jumped on the bandwagon, greenwashing their products to fulfill the growing pressure from consumers. One up-and-coming brand, Aubrey Jai, breaks the mold of what vegan leather bags can be. Aubrey Jai uses bold shapes and colors to convey their love for animals, the planet and that being fashionable can also be sustainable.

The bags we carry say a lot about who we are to others, whether our style is maximalist and bold or minimalist and simple, but in today’s world they also tell others what we value.

Aubrey Jai’s goal from the start was to build an ethos that would make their daughter (the namesake of their brand) proud and build a legacy and a bag that can be passed down to the next generation.

Meet the Bags

The designer’s daughter’s drawings inspire their current collections of unique, boldly shaped handbags. Aubrey Jai’s bags are meant to stand out and make a statement, whether out running errands or enjoying drinks with friends, an Aubrey Jai bag will always stand out in a crowd.

The mini bowling bag, the Oh!Bag, is the perfect companion to follow you throughout your day with plenty of room to carry your daily essentials such as your wallet, phone, and keys. The fun “O” cutout keeps the bag fun and makes it a bold statement. The Oh!Bag is available in two color options, red and orange or black and pink. It also comes with a crossbody bag so you have options on how you want to wear it.

The fun, playful, drawstring, pyramid shape and bold patterns of the Gold Spinarela will surely make you stand out while also having enough room to hold all your essentials while out on the town. The bag is roomy enough to carry all of your essentials such as a small wallet, keys and phone and it comes with a crossbody strap so you can decide how to wear your bag.

The best part of both bags is that they are made from vegan leather crafted from a small business. It’s a win, win, win in all directions of being cruelty free, sustainable, and supporting a small business while being bold and fashionable.

Part 1: An Introduction to Scarlette Magazine’s 2023/2024 Executive Board

Part 1: An Introduction to Scarlette Magazine’s 2023/2024 Executive Board

As one academic year ends another will soon begin and we are excited to announce our upcoming executive board members for the 2023/2024 academic year. This week we will be introducing our new presidents, vice president and secretary.

As we bid a fond farewell to our 2022/2023 executive board members and thank them for all of their hard work and dedication to another successful year for the magazine; we are excited to welcome our future Executive board members.

The new co-presidents & co-editor–in-chiefs will be Jordan Neifert & Morgan Vereb with Lily Polete as the vice president & assistant editor-in-chief. Ella Dipold will remain as Scarlette’s secretary.

We asked the new executive board members to share a little bit of their plans for next year and what they are most excited about for the upcoming year.

Jordan Neifert

I will be entering my senior year at Ohio State as a marketing major with a minor in fashion and retail studies. I will be the incoming co-president & co-editor-in-chief alongside Morgan Vereb.

“This organization has allowed me to grow so much and I couldn’t be more grateful to be a part of this team.”

What I am most excited about for next year is to be able to work with such an amazing team to create the best Scarlette Magazine issue yet.

I wanted to join the e-board to help develop an organization that can help me grow both personally and professionally and help the magazine grow. Another reason I am excited to join is because the members of Scarlette are so amazing which makes spending time with them a huge perk.

My favorite photoshoot during my time as a member of Scarlette Magazine has been the Spring 2023 nightlife shoot. It was so cool expressing my own personal style and showcasing Columbus nightlife with my friends.

Scarlette magazine allows you to meet so many different types of creative people that all come together to create something we can all be so proud of. This organization has allowed me to grow so much and I couldn’t be more grateful to be a part of this team.

Morgan Vereb

I am very excited to become the new co-editor-in-chief and co-president together with Jordan Neifert during my final year at Ohio State. I am an interior design major with a minor in environment, economy, development, and sustainability (EEDS).

I look forward to getting to know and work with new Scarlette members and to reconnect with our returning members for the upcoming academic year.

After COVID-19, Scarlette Magazine had to rebuild from the ground up, and in just a couple of years we have come so far. Last semester, we released our first-ever physical magazine copy. I am happy to continue that positive trajectory by serving as co-editor-in-chief to lead this group of uniquely passionate individuals in creating something we are all proud of.

“Whether you’re interested in styling, modeling, writing, marketing or graphic design, there is a place for you in Scarlette.”

My favorite photoshoot memory was during the nightlife shoot last semester. We shot in the Short North, and even though it was freezing, we had to stop for Jeni’s ice cream halfway through to get just the right shot.

The Scarlette community truly supersedes fashion itself, It’s an amazing creative outlet that is welcoming to anyone at Ohio State. Whether you’re interested in styling, modeling, writing, marketing or graphic design, there is a place for you in Scarlette.

Lily Polete

“Since joining Scarlette, I have been constantly inspired and encouraged by the members I’ve worked with. It is so much fun to work with and embrace everyone’s creativity to create our magazine.”

I am very excited and honored to become the vice president & assistant editor-in-chief for the upcoming academic school year. I am a marketing major with a minor in fashion and retail studies, entering my third year at Ohio State. I am excited to work with everyone on creative photoshoots and articles that come together to produce the final Scarlette issue, especially working on another printed version.

Since joining Scarlette, I have been constantly inspired and encouraged by the members I’ve worked with. It is so much fun to work with and embrace everyone’s creativity to create our magazine.

I was the shoot lead for the “Mad Hatter” photoshoot for the 2023 Spring/Summer issue and it was such a rewarding experience to get to see how my idea to enter a Wonderland-esque world turned into an amazing spread in the magazine. It took us many weeks of preparation to get from our initial mood boards into the actual studio, but I am so proud of my team that helped make my vision come to life.

The opportunities through Scarlette are endless, whether you are interested in photography, writing, social media, modeling, graphic design or anything else, there is a role for you to fill. I love the creativity of the club and we truly have the best people working on our magazine.

Ella Dipold

I am very excited to be able to continue being Scarlette Magazine’s secretary. I will be a Junior next year, majoring in studio art and minoring in marketing.

“I had no idea what I was getting into when I joined Scarlette, but I’m glad I didn’t let that intimidate me. I’ve had the opportunity to be heard, collaborate alongside like minded people and have met some amazing friends.”

I am looking forward to hearing everyone’s new ideas for photoshoots and to execute another successful year of printed magazines. I am most excited about being a member of the executive board for the upcoming academic year. I am excited to continue to help contribute to the growth and direction of the magazine after its successful comeback from the pandemic period.

Each photoshoot I’ve worked on was so much fun, but the “Barbie” shoot will always be special to me. The May-Fete shoot will also remain one of my strongest memories because it was a concept that I pitched and became a shoot leader for. Everything was going smoothly until we had terrible weather the day of the shoot and my models and I were running around barefoot and climbing trees in the freezing weather. Everyone was a good sport about it and we still ended up with some great photos that I am so proud of.

I had no idea what I was getting into when I joined Scarlette, but I’m glad I didn’t let that intimidate me. I’ve had the opportunity to be heard, collaborate alongside like minded people and have met some amazing friends. Scarlette is also entirely student-led and it’s a fantastic outlet for anyone interested in fashion and art.

Scarlette 2023 Senior Send Off

Scarlette 2023 Senior Send Off

The COVID-19 pandemic changed the world and Scarlette Magazine was no different. These past few years Scarlette Magazine was able to rise through its challenges and remerge stronger than it’s ever been before, reaching over 20,000 readers this semester and releasing our first ever printed issue of the magazine, none of which would have been possible without this year’s graduating seniors. As we send off our seniors into the world, we would like to thank them for all their hard work and wish them well in their future endeavors.

Our graduating seniors are Lena Wu, our Creative Director, President & Co-Editor-In-Chief, Archita Rout, Co-Editor-In-Chief and Co-President, LeVana Wu, Vice President & Assistant Editor-In-Chief and Hannah Mayle, the Director of Finance.

From left to right: Hannah Mayle, Lena Wu, Archita Rout, LeVana Wu

As our seniors enter the next chapter in their lives, we asked each of them to reflect on their time as a member of the Scarlette Magazine and share some of their experiences.

Lena Wu

During my time as a Scarlette member, I was honored to be able to be a part of the Executive Board. I was the Co- president, Creative Director & Co-Editor-In-Chief of Scarlette Magazine this year. My major was in communications with a focus in engagement & analysis with a minor in fashion & retail studies.

“It was nice to be in an environment where I was with people that supported each other and wanted to create something that showcased such amazing creativity.”

I initially joined Scarlette because of my love for fashion and all the amazing opportunities Scarlette offered. Everyone in the organization was very welcoming and open to trying out new ideas for photoshoots & how to build Scarlette back up during the pandemic. I loved working alongside all the members of Scarlette and it was nice to be in an environment where I was with people that supported each other and wanted to create something that showcased such amazing creativity. It was hard work but holding the printed magazine in my hands and celebrating it with everyone that worked so hard on the magazine was the best feeling in the world for me.

My favorite memory from being a part of Scarlette was leading our general meetings each week and slowly seeing our ideas turn into a photoshoot and then into a spread in the Magazine. I also loved having personal conversations with everyone within the organization. I enjoyed getting to know everyone a little bit more with each conversation. I loved all of our photoshoots this semester, picking just one is just too hard for me. Everyone who worked on each concept worked very hard and were passionate about their photoshoots. Just witnessing that was an amazing experience.

I know the skills I’ve learned while being a member of Scarlette will follow me into whatever career I will pursue post-graduation. I’ve learned how to run an organization of 40+ general members, photoshoots, social and fundraising events and many more life skills that are needed in both a work environment and in everyday life. I’m really grateful for all the lessons I’ve learned while being the President of a magazine and cannot wait to be able to use those skills very soon as I enter the Fashion Industry this summer.

My advice to the next generation of Scarlette members is to be open to all ideas even if it may not exactly be what you envisioned. The Initial ideas for photoshoots tend to evolve quite a bit throughout the semester, and most times the changes that occur to the concepts lead to amazing outcomes. Another piece of advice I have is to not be afraid of sharing your ideas or opinions. The best concepts and photoshoots all had great communication where everyone’s ideas were openly discussed, and everyone had a voice.  As an organization we welcome everyone from all majors to join, and we love to bring new ideas and new students into our organization. I wish Scarlette Magazine and all of its members the best and will always support the magazine in its future endeavors. I cannot wait to see what its members will create and showcase to its readers in the future!

Archita Rout

“My favorite part of Scarlette was getting to meet so many creative people who I would not normally meet within my major.”

I am a microbiology major with a minor in Arabic and epidemiology. This year I was the Co-President and Co-Editor-in-Chief. I joined Scarlette to continue my interests in fashion photography as well as meet other individuals with similar interests in this industry.

My favorite part of Scarlette was getting to meet so many creative people who I would not normally meet within my major. It was so fun getting to hear their ideas and passions, and also having them become close friends I will always love! Through Scarlette speaker workshops held over the semester, I learned a lot about networking and making connections and although I will not be joining the fashion industry and rather continuing to grad school, I know this will come in handy in any professional situation.

My favorite photoshoot has to be the Barbie shoot because it was so cool to watch everyone put together all the different Barbie “characters”. The shoot was so much fun, and I loved the way the pictures came out.

My advice to the future members of Scarlette Magazine is to remember to have fun and to push your creative limits – try out new things because you’ll surprise yourself with all the things you’re capable of doing.

LeVana Wu

“We pride ourselves on the fact that anyone from any major or background is welcome to join.”

My major is in communications with a focus on engagement & analysis. This year I was the Vice President & Assistant Editor-In-Chief.   I joined Scarlette because I love fashion and enjoyed putting together photoshoots. I also liked the fact that Scarlette is a 100% student-run organization. We pride ourselves on the fact that anyone from any major or background is welcome to join.

I love the creative and open-minded collaboration of putting together a fashion magazine. Scarlette allowed me to gain hands-on experience that classrooms don’t provide. I loved being a part of all of the photoshoots, but my favorite by far is probably our Barbie shoot that we did for the fall 2022 magazine issue.

The advice I have for the future Scarlette members is that the more energy you put into Scarlette the more you’ll get out. It’s hard work but seeing everyone’s collective work being put together in the printed version and reaching the goals you set for yourself, it’s an amazing feeling when you look back and see all you have accomplished. Another tip I’ll give is to keep an open mind and communicate your ideas, we want to hear them!

Hannah Mayle

I am a marketing major with a fashion & retail studies minor. I’ve been a part of Scarlette for the last two years, therefore, I had quite a few roles within the organization. During my time in Scarlette, I have been the Director of the Blog, President, and most recently the Financial Director.

I first heard about Scarlette Magazine from a friend of mine that helped introduce me to the organization during my freshman year and I joined because I loved working on photoshoots, and I loved the process of planning it. I also loved how creative and open the club was.

My favorite part about being a member of Scarlette was getting to meet so many creative, hardworking, and talented people. I feel like I have grown so much from being a part of Scarlette and the people in the club.

“Some advice that I have for future Scarlette members is to have fun and continue to think outside of the box, that’s what makes Scarlette so amazing.”

Being on the Scarlette Executive Board helped me learn how to be a leader and taught me what sort of leader I would like to be. I was able to work as part of a group and figure out my own strengths and weaknesses along the way.

My favorite shoot that I worked on from Scarlette would have to be Nude shoot by Philip Bradshaw in 2020, it was so fun to be in a studio and try something new.

Some advice that I have for future Scarlette members is to have fun and continue to think outside of the box, that’s what makes Scarlette so amazing.

Scarlette Class of ’23

Best of luck to our graduating seniors!

The First Monday in May: A Recap of the 2023 Met Gala

The First Monday in May: A Recap of the 2023 Met Gala

Monday marked the date of the 2023 Met Gala, notably referred to as “fashion’s biggest night out,” and last night’s looks proved this title to be true. The annual event raises money for the Metropolitan Museum of Art and is put on by Vogue and Anna Wintour, hosting an extremely exclusive guest list. This year’s theme was ‘Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty’ honoring the late creative director of Chanel and his incredible fashion influence. Despite Karl Lagerfeld’s many controversies and disputable reputation, his pioneering impact on the fashion industry and power are undeniable. Let’s take a look at some of this year’s best (and worst) reflections of Lagerfeld’s influence.

One of last night’s shockingly unique looks was Doja Cat living up to her name, dressed as Lagerfeld’s iconic and beloved cat, Choupette. Dressed in Oscar de la Renta and prosthetics by Malina Stearns, Doja even acted the part, meowing for all her interview responses.

One of the best looks of the night was Anne Hathaway, stunningly rocking a white tweed Versace gown. This look was inspired by not only Lagerfeld, and his heavy utilization of tweed, but also by a past Elizabeth Hurley look, designed by Versace, with the integration of safety pins. Anne had not attended a Met Gala since 2018, but after this look, I can see her becoming a regular on this red carpet!

Taking the cake as the most head-turning and wild look was Jared Leto. Leto dressed as Lagerfeld’s cat Choupette, as was Doja Cat, but Leto took his homage in a much more literal direction, unrecognizable in his full cat get-up. Leto later changed into a tamer all-black ensemble.

Wearing beautifully detailed custom Schiaparelli and Emefa Cole SMO Gold, Michaela Coel uniquely honored Lagerfeld’s love for elegance in embellishment.

Another one of my personal favorite looks was Anok Yai’s, who attended the event in a stunning dress designed by Prabal Gurung and a Piers Atkinson mask.

Nicole Kidman brought back the 2004 Chanel gown she wore in the iconic Chanel No. 5 commercial. Kidman beautifully honored Karl and their friendship by representing not only this gorgeous gown but the art corresponding to it.

Kendall Jenner, one of Lagerfeld’s most famous muses, rocked a full sequin Marc Jacob’s bodysuit. When interviewed Kendall emotionally thanked Lagerfeld for embracing her at such a young age and for his contribution towards the amazing modeling career she has today.

Rihanna and A$AP Rocky arrived fashionably late in custom Valentino and Bvlgari jewelry. Rocky took inspiration from Lagerfeld’s love for Scotland and a similar skirt he wore for a 2004 Chanel show, while also incorporating his own modern stylistic choices through studded denim and stacked belts. Rihanna on the other hand wore a cape covered in floral appliqués, one of Lagerfeld’s favorite touches, over a white bridal-esque gown. Could this be a hint that the two will soon get engaged?

Dua Lipa looked absolutely fabulous in Chanel FW92 Couture accessorizing with a 100-carat Tiffany & Co. diamond. Everyone knew that had to be at least one Chanel bridal gown at this year’s Met Gala and Dua Lipa lived up to everyone’s expectations in this gown.

Although some did not love the Miu Miu suit worn by Emma Chamberlain last night, it is amazing to see her continuous influence and integration into the luxury fashion space. Chamberlain has notably broken the barrier between influencers and celebrity high society, two areas that before her rarely ever seemed to collaborate. Her presence at fashion’s biggest and most exclusive event is inspiring to not only her viewers and fans but also to influencers and content creators across the globe.

This year’s attendees did an excellent job of reminiscing on Karl’s iconic influence, taste and work across numerous fashion houses outside of just Chanel. Common themes included black and white monochromes, ties and collars, blazers, pearls, tweed, and oddly enough… cats!

To view the hundreds of other looks from last night, check out vogue.com. Additionally, if you plan to be in New York City this year, check out the highly anticipated corresponding exhibit. I know I will be!
