The Wonderfully Weird World of Tim Burton

The Wonderfully Weird World of Tim Burton

Tim Burton is known for producing films that capitalize on macabre-esque styles while also including elements of classic fantasy films. Burton’s style is so incredibly unique that the term “Burtonesque” was created to describe works of art that bear resemblance to his works.

His films – seeming inspired by expressionism – employ gothic undertones that construct bizarre characters and eccentric settings.

According to Britannica, Burton first began his career at the California Institute of the Arts where he first discovered his love for filmmaking and drawing.

Burton proceeded to become an animator for Walt Disney Studios. He later directed “Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure” in 1985, which was a huge success for his first feature film.

Burton then took off running. “Beetlejuice,” “Edward Scissorhands” and “The Nightmare Before Christmas” are just a few of his box-office successes.

One of his common stylistic trademarks is his dramatic color schemes. Burton implements dark, bleak colors and contrasts them with colorful elements, creating a visual discrepancy between the characters and their background.

This color contrast is depicted in “Beetlejuice” with Lydia Deetz’s auroral wedding dress while Beetlejuice’s green hair is the antithesis of the moody background.

In Burton’s 1990 feature film “Edward Scissorhands” this technique is used in an entirely new way. Johnny Depp’s lead role as Edward is the dark contrast while the entire world around him is displayed in light and bright colors.

Burton also utilizes stop-motion animation in many of his works. The minor imperfections only add to the enigmatic ambiance that is rife within his films.

“Corpse Bride,” “James and the Giant Peach,” “Frankenweenie” and “The Nightmare Before Christmas” use jerky movements to their advantage, adding to the unsettling and otherworldly feel.

The use of stripes is frequently incorporated into his films, reflecting the sinister nature of the worlds he creates. Beetlejuice, Jack Skellington, Edward Scissorhands, the Cheshire Cat and the Corpse Bride are all seen wearing at least one outfit that includes this pattern.

Burton has created such a specific film style, that many can recognize his works simply because of his stylistic decisions. When watching your next Tim Burton movie, try to distinguish the specific traits that make the film “Burtonesque.”

Unique Costumes for Halloween This Year

Unique Costumes for Halloween This Year

As the weather cools down and the leaves begin to fall, the best part of the season is quickly approaching.

Halloween is something to look forward to throughout the month of October and one of the most important aspects of the holiday to consider is what you will wear come Oct. 31. Here are just a few ideas for costumes that will make you stand out in a crowd this year.

Pageant Queen

Emerging in the 1920s-’50s, beauty pageants have become an iconic pop culture staple. This super girly costume idea is for anyone who likes to wear a crown. The completed look includes a mini dress, a colorful sash with matching gloves, a jumbo crown and some glitzy jewelry.

Ursula’s Human Form

Since “The Little Mermaid” was first released in 1989, girls have dressed up as Ariel, Ursula and even Sebastian. With the live-action remake of the film having been released in May of this year, Ariel is bound to be a popular costume this year. But one of the most overlooked costume ideas from the original film is Ursula’s gorgeous human form.

She wears a few outfits throughout the film but they all have a very important staple accessory – the shell that holds Ariel’s voice. Among all of her outfit combinations, there is an addition of shiny dark hair and a sea shell necklace and with that, you have embodied the iconic villain. You can also make it a couples costume with the addition of your very own Prince Eric.

Jester

If you are looking for a more chic costume this year, a vintage-inspired jester is a perfect match for you.

This costume serves as a great way to express a variety of different styles of outfits by adding pieces with fun shapes, bright colors and wacky accessories. This can also easily become a group costume by pairing different silhouettes, creating a cohesive jester lookbook.

Romeo + Juliet

A dreamy couples costume for a pair of lovers is Romeo and Juliet. In particular, Baz Luhrmann’s 1996 “Romeo + Juliet” starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes has become an iconic take on one of the world’s most famous couples.

To bring this look to life, dressing up in shiny armor and a bright angel outfit serves as the perfect recreation of the most memorable looks from the film and is a very achievable, recognizable but niche costume for fashionable couples.

Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders

With the NFL and NCAA in full swing, being a cheerleader is a perfect option for a fun costume that can be accomplished alone or in a group.

The competitive career of being a Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader makes for a perfect costume that is full of life. The look is both unique and fun and is topped off with sparkly stars, pom poms and high-heeled cowboy boots.

Eminem and Christina Aguilera

Throwing it back to the early 2000s, the famous enemies-to-lovers trope between Eminem and Christina Aguilera would make for a unique couples costume this year.

The musical heartthrobs had an interesting relationship full of flirtatious comments and epic drama. There are many iconic 90s and 2000s looks from the couple that could serve as perfect costume looks including their 2002 VMA Awards looks from when Aguilera awarded Eminem with his VMA for Best Male Video.

Suits

Although the show “Suits” hasn’t aired since 2019, it picked up popularity after the show became available for streaming on Netflix this summer.

A single, duo or group costume based on this show would be trendy and stylish. The looks could be easily achieved by wearing full suits, cropped suits or business casual outfits with a big pair of sunglasses. Being a lawyer has never been so easy – and so fashionable.

Emblematic Horror Film Fashion

Emblematic Horror Film Fashion

The fashion industry has derived inspiration from horror films for generations. Stark, gothic styles have been a staple of Halloween fashion, creating a sinister ambiance within the world of cinema.

The modernization of scary movies has incorporated aberrant fashion elements, such as the natural wardrobe amongst characters in Jordan Peele’s “Get Out” or Dani’s (Florence Pugh) flower-covered May Queen dress in “Midsommar,” as many films now rely on psychological elements.

However, certain fashion statements can never die. Here are some of the most iconic Halloween styles delineated in film.

Alfred Hitchcock’s “Psycho” is a prime example of vintage horror. This 1960s thriller is produced in black and white, leading it to employ other tools besides color to showcase its unnerving semblance.

The lead Marion Crane (Janet Leigh) is seen wearing a 60s-style swing dress, along with lacey undergarments. This portrayal of slasher victims was ubiquitous in horror films produced during this time period.

In Merian C. Cooper and Ernest B. Schoedsack’s 1933 film, “King Kong,” Ann Darrow (Fay Wray) furthers this depiction as she is featured wearing similar attire when being captured by the giant ape.

Don’t say his name three times, or you might be confronted with the biggest fashion icon in cinema history. Beetlejuice’s pinstripe suit has become a pinnacle of Tim Burton’s 1998 film “Beetlejuice” and a considerable influence for tick-or-treaters looking for the perfect costume.

One of Micheal Keaton’s most iconic characters is seen wearing three – his lucky number – rusty watches, which are haphazardly placed across his left wrist, also paired with a gold ring on his index finger.

In one of the most infamous scenes from the film, Lydia Deetz (Winona Ryder) is seen wearing an all-red wedding dress — a dress that has become a Halloween staple since the release of the film.

Shelley Duvall has a history of fashion statements and “The Shining” is no exception. This 1980 Stanley Kubrick film features Duvall, playing Wendy Torrance, in a printed button-down layered over a beige turtleneck with a corduroy overall dress – a look that has become one of the most recognizable outfits from any horror film.

Disney’s “Hocus Pocus” serves as a representation of fabulous witches. These three sisters – Winifred (Bette Midler), Mary (Kathy Najimy) and Sarah (Sarah Jessica Parker) Sanderson – are seen wearing muted corset dresses with Victorian-inspired patterns.

Jewelry is an integral detail of these looks. The witches are sporting rings on almost all 10 digits, all of varying sizes and materials along with lace gloves and beaded necklaces.

This blood-stained prom dress served as a symbol of Carrie White’s (Sissy Spacek) redaction of innocence. The elegant setting juxtaposes the crimson-red tarnish of the dress, creating an unforgettable scene.

This hooded killer had viewers believing their next phone call would lead them to the same deadly fate. Bearing a resemblance to the notorious Grim Reaper, this costume has served as a token of terror throughout the industry.

With Halloween approaching, you can turn to these fashion symbols to create your next costume.

Ready-to-Scare: Monster High’s Collaboration with Off-White™

Ready-to-Scare: Monster High’s Collaboration with Off-White™

“Monster High,” the American multimedia-supported fashion doll franchise, began with the release of just six dolls in 2010 – Clawdeen Wolf, Lagoona Blue, Cleo de Nile, Deuce Gorgon, Frankie Stein and Draculaura – all representing teenage children of iconic monsters and creatures from classic films, folklore and myths.

Since then, the franchise has grown to include two spin-off toy lines – “Ever After High” in July 2013 based on fairy tales and fables and “Enchantimals” in 2017 featuring human-animal hybrids – and has released close to 1,000 Monster High dolls.

Now, just in time for Halloween, “Monster High” is ready to release the first-ever ready-to-scare collection in collaboration with Off-White™. A collection of designer dolls that are ready to make a grand en-trance at any red carpet event.

The Electra Melody Doll – which launches this Friday at 9 a.m. – is the first of four new ghouls in this high-fashion collaboration with Off-White™, with the other four dolls being released by January 2024.

According to Mattel’s website, each of the outfits for the four new dolls was hand-picked by the Off-White™ team from some of the brand’s most iconic archival runway looks.

The Electra Melody Doll is wearing a look from 2018 – the “DRESS” dress, mismatched red and black webbed gloves, Off-White™ inspired clear shoes and sunglasses along with an Off-White™ Burrow 22 shoulder bag with a skullette charm added. Her look is completed with an orange and black mohawk, orange eyeshadow and black lipstick to tie everything together.

Annalise Lao, the senior product designer at Mattel said in a statement on Mattel’s website that creating the miniatures for the dolls wasn’t easy but it paid off in the end.

“The Off-White™ team sent us references of patterns, runway photography and even some in-house samples to understand the construction of the garments and accessories,” said designer Lao. “And if you look closely, you just might find some unique Monster High twists to some of the looks.”

The doll comes complete with an Off-White™ certificate of authenticity and display box. The box comes with a clear display case and display stand for the doll’s bag.

“We felt that every detail of the doll, fashion and their accessories are worthy of an experience equivalent to an art gallery exhibit,” said packaging designer Olga Tesler in a statement on Mattel’s website.

Electra Melody will be available for purchase on Mattel’s website for $150 this Friday with a limit of two dolls per order.

Fashion Highlight: Jenna Ortega as Wednesday Addams

Fashion Highlight: Jenna Ortega as Wednesday Addams

With Halloween around the corner, the fashion that surrounds this time of year takes center stage.

A notoriously well-dressed character of this time of the year is the one and only Wednesday Addams.

In 2022, Netflix aired a spinoff series that focused entirely on Wednesday Addams (Jenna Ortega) as she goes through her teenage years in a private school for werewolves, sirens, shape-shifting and everyone in between.

Although her personal style is also notable, Ortega’s Wednesday wardrobe is perfect for this fall, with a bit of a morbid flare.

Colleen Atwood, the lead costume designer for the show, said in an interview for Women’s Wear Daily that she was trying to modernize the character of Wednesday while also paying homage to her roots. And Atwood has done an amazing job, Ortega’s character resembles the original Wednesday, but now elevating her to a more wearable teenage girl style.

The central color of all her outfits is black and although she is never seen in bright colors, she often has pieces that incorporate white as well to create the perfect balance of light and dark.

Exclusively black and white outfits may sound boring to most, but Ortega is seen wearing bold patterns and layering jackets and sweaters in all of her outfits, making for more of a dynamic wardrobe than we are used to for the iconic character.

Chunky sweaters are a staple to many of Wednesday’s looks and can offer perfect inspiration for your fall wardrobe this year too.

Ortega is also often styled with overly conspicuous collars and lace details that emphasize her character’s dramatic personality and draw attention to her melodramatic facial expressions.

In the most famous scene from this series, Wednesday goes to a school dance wearing a billowy, black lace dress, adding a layer of gothic ambiance to the scene. The look quickly became the most popular look from the series after the dance Ortega choreographed went viral.

Atwood said the dress had several versions made due to the fact that immediately following the dancing, a downpour of blood stained the beautiful lace and frills.

“Of course, my work crew wanted to kill me because it had to get blood on it.” said Atwood. “We had to make copies of it and it was a lot of work.” (Women’s Wear Daily)

Ortega not only embodied Wednesday during the filming of the show, but her red carpet looks during the release were right on theme as well. She perfectly captures the same moody, goth-inspired in her wardrobe.

Her styling outside the show is a bit more form-fitting and mature. The outfits are still dominated by dark colors but have corsets, lace and jewelry, meshing Ortega’s style with Wednesday’s perfectly.

This goes to show that Jenna Ortega has proven time and time again that she was meant for this role, truly embodying Wednesday Addams, both on and off-screen.
