June Might be Over, But Pride Never Ends

June Might be Over, But Pride Never Ends

Although pride month has come to an end, our support for the LGBTQ+ community does not.

The LGBTQ+ community has had a tremendous impact on modern fashion with many industry members, past and present, that identify as LGBTQ+ working within the industry today. Many of which have become fashion icons, such as Freddie Mercury, David Bowie, Alexander McQueen and Laverne Cox.

The LGBTQ+ community also has a rich history within the fashion designer community, with designers like Marc Jacobs, Pierre Cardin, Michael Kors, Giorgio Armani and many more leaving their mark in the world of fashion.

Although pride month has ended, we would like to highlight a few queer-owned fashion and beauty brands to support all year round.

Part 3: An Introduction to Scarlette Magazine’s 2023/2024 Scarlette Executive Board

Part 3: An Introduction to Scarlette Magazine’s 2023/2024 Scarlette Executive Board

Summer break is well underway, but Scarlette Magazine and its creative team are working harder than ever to bring its readers new and exciting content every week. As our members continue to create and share their hard work to the world, Scarlette Magazine is pleased to announce that for the upcoming academic year we have added three new roles onto the executive board.

Clovis Westlund will be Scarlette’s photoshoot director, Katie Gallaugher as the marketing director, and Jordan Hylton as the social events and fundraising director. The upcoming graphics design director will be Jocelyn Bailey.

While they set into their new positions within the magazine, we asked them to share a little bit of their plans for Scarlette next year and what they are most excited about for the upcoming year.

Clovis Westlund

I am very excited to be able to join the e-board as the director of photoshoots. I am double majoring in public affairs and sociology. The reason I joined the Scarlette e-board is so I can better support members in bringing their vision to life and making sure they are proud of the final product that they created.

“There are so many opportunities to have your voice heard.”

The thing I am most excited about for next year is being able to help turn everyone’s ideas into a reality. My favorite photoshoot I participated in last semester was the gender-neutral photoshoot because I was the shoot leader for the concept.

Ohio State students should join because the magazine is run completely by students, so there are so many opportunities to have your voice heard.

Katherine Gallaugher

I’m very excited to be able to help shape the newest e-board position as the upcoming marketing director. I’m a psychology and English double major and will be entering my second year at Ohio State.

“I am most looking forward to working with such a creative team and watching our vision come to life.”

My favorite photoshoot was “The Wild Midwest” because I was able to work with my good friend, Samantha Harden and watch our rough idea go from just a concept, then to a possible blog post and then become part of the print magazine.

I decided to join the e-board for the upcoming year because I love participating in Scarlette and I wanted to be more involved, so I felt like I should take on a leadership role within the magazine.

I am most looking forward to working with such a creative team and watching our vision come to life.

Jordan Hylton

I am very excited to become the social events and fundraising director for Scarlette Magazine. I am a marketing major with a minor in fashion and retail studies.

My favorite photoshoot was the spring “May-Fete” shoot because even though it was a difficult shoot day, I loved how the photos and the article turned out.

I wanted to join Scarlette’s e-board because I wanted to help plan events for members to be able to have fun and get to know each other more. As I join the new e-board I am most excited to be able to get to know everyone better and create amazing photo shoots throughout the next academic year.

I think other students should consider joining the magazine because It’s a great creative outlet and allows you to meet people who are interested in fashion.

Jocelyn Bailey

I wanted to join Scarlette Magazine and its executive board because I thought it would be a good opportunity for me to express myself.”

I’m so excited to help rebrand Scarlette and design visually aesthetic layouts for each magazine issue as the upcoming graphics design director. I’m new to the Scarlette Magazine organization as a whole, so I don’t have any photoshoot experience, but I loved attending Scarlette’s Spring 2023 Launch Party and getting to meet all the amazing people involved in the organization. It was an amazing introduction to Scarlette, and I loved participating in activities related to the photoshoots.

I wanted to join Scarlette Magazine and its executive board because I thought it would be a good opportunity for me to express myself and provide hands-on experience with digital design, which I’m hoping will help me out for my future career as a web designer.

Welcome to the 2023/2024 Scarlette Magazine Executive Board

As the previous president and editor-in-chief of this amazing organization, it is with great pleasure that I was able to introduce the next generation of Scarlette Magazine’s e-board. I cannot wait to see what Scarlette Magazine will create with the many talents of its creative team.

Part 2: An introduction to Scarlette Magazine’s 2023/2024 Scarlette Executive Board

Part 2: An introduction to Scarlette Magazine’s 2023/2024 Scarlette Executive Board

Summer break has officially begun, but that doesn’t mean Scarlette is on hiatus. In fact, the magazine has been busier than ever, creating new and amazing content for our readers and preparing for next semester.

As our members continue to create and share their hard work, Scarlette Magazine is pleased to continue welcoming our new members to the executive board.

The new writing director is Samantha Harden, our upcoming social media director is Averie Ison, the new director of finance is Comeila Soltanirad and Maggie Harkins will become the photography director.

As they settle into their new roles, we asked them to share a little bit about their plans for next year and what they are most excited about for the upcoming year.

Samantha Harden

I am a third-year student with a journalism major, which is why I am very excited for my new role as the writing director. I have already done a lot of writing and editing for Scarlette, but I am excited to have a bigger role in the magazine next semester.

“I joined Scarlette Magazine just one semester ago but I very quickly grew to love everything about it.”

I am looking forward to being involved with many different aspects of the magazine, from helping with collaborations to editing and publishing all of our online stories throughout the year.

I joined Scarlette Magazine just one semester ago but I very quickly grew to love everything about it. I wanted to join Scarlette’s executive board because I wanted to play a bigger role in the decision making and creativity that goes into each issue of the magazine.

I enjoyed getting to work on the Cowboy shoot with Katie Gallugher. We worked together to put the entire shoot together, everything from the outfits to the locations was something we thought through very carefully and made sure it turned out just the way we envisioned.

I think others should join Scarlette Magazine because it is such a welcoming club to be a part of. Even if you are not a fashion major or minor, there is a place for everyone in the club.

Averie Ison

I will be taking over as the new social media director for the upcoming school year.

I am a second-year, majoring in communications, with a double minor in fashion and retail studies and media production and analysis.

Since joining Scarlette, I have become very passionate about the organization and have been wanting to get more involved. I have experience with creating posts and running social media pages, so I am very excited for my position as the new social media director.

“The magazine takes photographers, stylists, models, graphic designers, writers, a social media team and more to put together, so there is room for everyone.”

I am most excited to be able to work closely with such talented and creative people to put together our magazine.

My favorite photoshoot I participated in was the “Mad Hatter” shoot. The theme gave us the ability to put together some super cool outfits and highlight those outfits in the studio with unique and bold poses. I have also really enjoyed getting to know the amazing journeys and portfolios of our inspiring guest speakers.

Scarlette offers a creative outlet and community for everyone, whether you are interested in fashion or not. The magazine takes photographers, stylists, models, graphic designers, writers, a social media team and more to put together, so there is room for everyone.

Comelia Soltanirad

I am excited to be able to be a part of the Scarlette e-board as the director of finance. I am a third-year, chemistry major with a minor in environmental engineering.

“My favorite part about being a member of Scarlette has been the many opportunities I have had to meet so many people who are so passionate about what they do.”

I originally joined Scarlette because I wanted to be a part of a club that promotes creativity, especially within fashion and I am most excited for the upcoming photoshoots and seeing everyone’s ideas come to life for the magazine next semester.

My favorite part about being a member of Scarlette has been the many opportunities I have had to meet so many people who are so passionate about what they do.

I believe students should consider joining Scarlette because it is such an amazing way to meet others who are also passionate about fashion, and everyone is so kind, creative and welcoming.

Maggie Harkins

My e-board position next semester will be as the director of photography. I am a second-year with a major in studio art and an emphasis in photography and a minor in American Sign Language.

“Being able to contribute my ideas in photography at a higher level is something that means a lot to me.”

I’m most excited about being a part of Scarlette as an executive member rather than just a general member. Being able to contribute my ideas in photography at a higher level is something that means a lot to me.

I wanted to join the Scarlette executive board because as the director of photography sounded like a great opportunity for me to be more involved with Scarlette and pursue something I love at the same time.

My favorite photoshoot was the “Mad Hatter” shoot for the spring 2023 issue. It was a lot of fun getting to be the photographer for such a fun and creative shoot, and I loved working with everyone.

Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month: APPI Influences in Fashion and Beauty

Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month: APPI Influences in Fashion and Beauty

May marks a month of many celebrations, the start of summer break, the blossoming of flowers, but May is also the start to a month-long celebration of the Asian American Pacific Islander communities – commonly known as APPI.

The month of May is Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, a month when we celebrate the important contributions the AAPI community has had in American history, society, culture and, of course, fashion and beauty.

Whether you prefer minimalist or maximalist, the fashion industry wouldn’t be the same without the influences of AAPI-owned brands and businesses. Many of these brands are considered to be the trendsetters of their industries and without their influences we may have never learned how to achieve a glowing skincare routine or even think of having multiple steps to our daily skincare routine.

With the rise of K-pop, anime and manga, the APPI fashion influences are only beginning to take over mainstream fashion trends. The rise of these genres has found an audience with the most prominent luxury fashion brands of all time, including Gucci, Chanel, Dior, Givenchy, Balmain and Moschino, and quickly creating high-fashion looks inspired by Asian heritage.

As we celebrate the APPI community, let’s not forget their importance in our history and their contributions to our modern society & fashion industry.

Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders have played vital roles in shaping the United States to what it is today, from building the Transcontinental Railroad to advocating for equal rights and labor laws to fighting in multiple wars but the history and the contributions of the APPI communities is often overlooked.

The APPI community made these societal contributions while also facing persistent discrimination and violence throughout American history and is still facing many of the same issues today.

Although the effects from the equal rights movements during the pandemic may have dwindled, the APPI community continues to feel the impact of Covid-fueled xenophobia and anti-Asian racism.

It’s important to remember to support Asian and Pacific Islander-owned brands not just this month, but year-round. Whether you’re looking for your next statement fashion piece or a new skincare solution, these are the AAPI-owned brands you’ll want to have in your closest and beauty counters long after AAPI Heritage Month.

Part 1: An Introduction to Scarlette Magazine’s 2023/2024 Executive Board

Part 1: An Introduction to Scarlette Magazine’s 2023/2024 Executive Board

As one academic year ends another will soon begin and we are excited to announce our upcoming executive board members for the 2023/2024 academic year. This week we will be introducing our new presidents, vice president and secretary.

As we bid a fond farewell to our 2022/2023 executive board members and thank them for all of their hard work and dedication to another successful year for the magazine; we are excited to welcome our future Executive board members.

The new co-presidents & co-editor–in-chiefs will be Jordan Neifert & Morgan Vereb with Lily Polete as the vice president & assistant editor-in-chief. Ella Dipold will remain as Scarlette’s secretary.

We asked the new executive board members to share a little bit of their plans for next year and what they are most excited about for the upcoming year.

Jordan Neifert

I will be entering my senior year at Ohio State as a marketing major with a minor in fashion and retail studies. I will be the incoming co-president & co-editor-in-chief alongside Morgan Vereb.

“This organization has allowed me to grow so much and I couldn’t be more grateful to be a part of this team.”

What I am most excited about for next year is to be able to work with such an amazing team to create the best Scarlette Magazine issue yet.

I wanted to join the e-board to help develop an organization that can help me grow both personally and professionally and help the magazine grow. Another reason I am excited to join is because the members of Scarlette are so amazing which makes spending time with them a huge perk.

My favorite photoshoot during my time as a member of Scarlette Magazine has been the Spring 2023 nightlife shoot. It was so cool expressing my own personal style and showcasing Columbus nightlife with my friends.

Scarlette magazine allows you to meet so many different types of creative people that all come together to create something we can all be so proud of. This organization has allowed me to grow so much and I couldn’t be more grateful to be a part of this team.

Morgan Vereb

I am very excited to become the new co-editor-in-chief and co-president together with Jordan Neifert during my final year at Ohio State. I am an interior design major with a minor in environment, economy, development, and sustainability (EEDS).

I look forward to getting to know and work with new Scarlette members and to reconnect with our returning members for the upcoming academic year.

After COVID-19, Scarlette Magazine had to rebuild from the ground up, and in just a couple of years we have come so far. Last semester, we released our first-ever physical magazine copy. I am happy to continue that positive trajectory by serving as co-editor-in-chief to lead this group of uniquely passionate individuals in creating something we are all proud of.

“Whether you’re interested in styling, modeling, writing, marketing or graphic design, there is a place for you in Scarlette.”

My favorite photoshoot memory was during the nightlife shoot last semester. We shot in the Short North, and even though it was freezing, we had to stop for Jeni’s ice cream halfway through to get just the right shot.

The Scarlette community truly supersedes fashion itself, It’s an amazing creative outlet that is welcoming to anyone at Ohio State. Whether you’re interested in styling, modeling, writing, marketing or graphic design, there is a place for you in Scarlette.

Lily Polete

“Since joining Scarlette, I have been constantly inspired and encouraged by the members I’ve worked with. It is so much fun to work with and embrace everyone’s creativity to create our magazine.”

I am very excited and honored to become the vice president & assistant editor-in-chief for the upcoming academic school year. I am a marketing major with a minor in fashion and retail studies, entering my third year at Ohio State. I am excited to work with everyone on creative photoshoots and articles that come together to produce the final Scarlette issue, especially working on another printed version.

Since joining Scarlette, I have been constantly inspired and encouraged by the members I’ve worked with. It is so much fun to work with and embrace everyone’s creativity to create our magazine.

I was the shoot lead for the “Mad Hatter” photoshoot for the 2023 Spring/Summer issue and it was such a rewarding experience to get to see how my idea to enter a Wonderland-esque world turned into an amazing spread in the magazine. It took us many weeks of preparation to get from our initial mood boards into the actual studio, but I am so proud of my team that helped make my vision come to life.

The opportunities through Scarlette are endless, whether you are interested in photography, writing, social media, modeling, graphic design or anything else, there is a role for you to fill. I love the creativity of the club and we truly have the best people working on our magazine.

Ella Dipold

I am very excited to be able to continue being Scarlette Magazine’s secretary. I will be a Junior next year, majoring in studio art and minoring in marketing.

“I had no idea what I was getting into when I joined Scarlette, but I’m glad I didn’t let that intimidate me. I’ve had the opportunity to be heard, collaborate alongside like minded people and have met some amazing friends.”

I am looking forward to hearing everyone’s new ideas for photoshoots and to execute another successful year of printed magazines. I am most excited about being a member of the executive board for the upcoming academic year. I am excited to continue to help contribute to the growth and direction of the magazine after its successful comeback from the pandemic period.

Each photoshoot I’ve worked on was so much fun, but the “Barbie” shoot will always be special to me. The May-Fete shoot will also remain one of my strongest memories because it was a concept that I pitched and became a shoot leader for. Everything was going smoothly until we had terrible weather the day of the shoot and my models and I were running around barefoot and climbing trees in the freezing weather. Everyone was a good sport about it and we still ended up with some great photos that I am so proud of.

I had no idea what I was getting into when I joined Scarlette, but I’m glad I didn’t let that intimidate me. I’ve had the opportunity to be heard, collaborate alongside like minded people and have met some amazing friends. Scarlette is also entirely student-led and it’s a fantastic outlet for anyone interested in fashion and art.

Scarlette 2023 Senior Send Off

Scarlette 2023 Senior Send Off

The COVID-19 pandemic changed the world and Scarlette Magazine was no different. These past few years Scarlette Magazine was able to rise through its challenges and remerge stronger than it’s ever been before, reaching over 20,000 readers this semester and releasing our first ever printed issue of the magazine, none of which would have been possible without this year’s graduating seniors. As we send off our seniors into the world, we would like to thank them for all their hard work and wish them well in their future endeavors.

Our graduating seniors are Lena Wu, our Creative Director, President & Co-Editor-In-Chief, Archita Rout, Co-Editor-In-Chief and Co-President, LeVana Wu, Vice President & Assistant Editor-In-Chief and Hannah Mayle, the Director of Finance.

From left to right: Hannah Mayle, Lena Wu, Archita Rout, LeVana Wu

As our seniors enter the next chapter in their lives, we asked each of them to reflect on their time as a member of the Scarlette Magazine and share some of their experiences.

Lena Wu

During my time as a Scarlette member, I was honored to be able to be a part of the Executive Board. I was the Co- president, Creative Director & Co-Editor-In-Chief of Scarlette Magazine this year. My major was in communications with a focus in engagement & analysis with a minor in fashion & retail studies.

“It was nice to be in an environment where I was with people that supported each other and wanted to create something that showcased such amazing creativity.”

I initially joined Scarlette because of my love for fashion and all the amazing opportunities Scarlette offered. Everyone in the organization was very welcoming and open to trying out new ideas for photoshoots & how to build Scarlette back up during the pandemic. I loved working alongside all the members of Scarlette and it was nice to be in an environment where I was with people that supported each other and wanted to create something that showcased such amazing creativity. It was hard work but holding the printed magazine in my hands and celebrating it with everyone that worked so hard on the magazine was the best feeling in the world for me.

My favorite memory from being a part of Scarlette was leading our general meetings each week and slowly seeing our ideas turn into a photoshoot and then into a spread in the Magazine. I also loved having personal conversations with everyone within the organization. I enjoyed getting to know everyone a little bit more with each conversation. I loved all of our photoshoots this semester, picking just one is just too hard for me. Everyone who worked on each concept worked very hard and were passionate about their photoshoots. Just witnessing that was an amazing experience.

I know the skills I’ve learned while being a member of Scarlette will follow me into whatever career I will pursue post-graduation. I’ve learned how to run an organization of 40+ general members, photoshoots, social and fundraising events and many more life skills that are needed in both a work environment and in everyday life. I’m really grateful for all the lessons I’ve learned while being the President of a magazine and cannot wait to be able to use those skills very soon as I enter the Fashion Industry this summer.

My advice to the next generation of Scarlette members is to be open to all ideas even if it may not exactly be what you envisioned. The Initial ideas for photoshoots tend to evolve quite a bit throughout the semester, and most times the changes that occur to the concepts lead to amazing outcomes. Another piece of advice I have is to not be afraid of sharing your ideas or opinions. The best concepts and photoshoots all had great communication where everyone’s ideas were openly discussed, and everyone had a voice.  As an organization we welcome everyone from all majors to join, and we love to bring new ideas and new students into our organization. I wish Scarlette Magazine and all of its members the best and will always support the magazine in its future endeavors. I cannot wait to see what its members will create and showcase to its readers in the future!

Archita Rout

“My favorite part of Scarlette was getting to meet so many creative people who I would not normally meet within my major.”

I am a microbiology major with a minor in Arabic and epidemiology. This year I was the Co-President and Co-Editor-in-Chief. I joined Scarlette to continue my interests in fashion photography as well as meet other individuals with similar interests in this industry.

My favorite part of Scarlette was getting to meet so many creative people who I would not normally meet within my major. It was so fun getting to hear their ideas and passions, and also having them become close friends I will always love! Through Scarlette speaker workshops held over the semester, I learned a lot about networking and making connections and although I will not be joining the fashion industry and rather continuing to grad school, I know this will come in handy in any professional situation.

My favorite photoshoot has to be the Barbie shoot because it was so cool to watch everyone put together all the different Barbie “characters”. The shoot was so much fun, and I loved the way the pictures came out.

My advice to the future members of Scarlette Magazine is to remember to have fun and to push your creative limits – try out new things because you’ll surprise yourself with all the things you’re capable of doing.

LeVana Wu

“We pride ourselves on the fact that anyone from any major or background is welcome to join.”

My major is in communications with a focus on engagement & analysis. This year I was the Vice President & Assistant Editor-In-Chief.   I joined Scarlette because I love fashion and enjoyed putting together photoshoots. I also liked the fact that Scarlette is a 100% student-run organization. We pride ourselves on the fact that anyone from any major or background is welcome to join.

I love the creative and open-minded collaboration of putting together a fashion magazine. Scarlette allowed me to gain hands-on experience that classrooms don’t provide. I loved being a part of all of the photoshoots, but my favorite by far is probably our Barbie shoot that we did for the fall 2022 magazine issue.

The advice I have for the future Scarlette members is that the more energy you put into Scarlette the more you’ll get out. It’s hard work but seeing everyone’s collective work being put together in the printed version and reaching the goals you set for yourself, it’s an amazing feeling when you look back and see all you have accomplished. Another tip I’ll give is to keep an open mind and communicate your ideas, we want to hear them!

Hannah Mayle

I am a marketing major with a fashion & retail studies minor. I’ve been a part of Scarlette for the last two years, therefore, I had quite a few roles within the organization. During my time in Scarlette, I have been the Director of the Blog, President, and most recently the Financial Director.

I first heard about Scarlette Magazine from a friend of mine that helped introduce me to the organization during my freshman year and I joined because I loved working on photoshoots, and I loved the process of planning it. I also loved how creative and open the club was.

My favorite part about being a member of Scarlette was getting to meet so many creative, hardworking, and talented people. I feel like I have grown so much from being a part of Scarlette and the people in the club.

“Some advice that I have for future Scarlette members is to have fun and continue to think outside of the box, that’s what makes Scarlette so amazing.”

Being on the Scarlette Executive Board helped me learn how to be a leader and taught me what sort of leader I would like to be. I was able to work as part of a group and figure out my own strengths and weaknesses along the way.

My favorite shoot that I worked on from Scarlette would have to be Nude shoot by Philip Bradshaw in 2020, it was so fun to be in a studio and try something new.

Some advice that I have for future Scarlette members is to have fun and continue to think outside of the box, that’s what makes Scarlette so amazing.

Scarlette Class of ’23

As we wrapped up the 2022-2023 academic year and bid a farewell to our seniors, Scarlette will always remember our alumni for their accomplishments & contribution, and we look forward to continuing their legacy in the upcoming 2023-2024 School year.

Best of luck to our graduating seniors!
