Did you know that our club’s advisor, Dr. Sandra Metzler, runs a soap company? We had an extensive tour at her soap store and production facilities and learned more about the soap making process.
Have you ever worry about the risks associated with artificial and harmful ingredients in synthetic soaps, but can’t seem to find a healthier, natural alternative? As a mother of three & a Biomedical Engineer, Dr. Metzler understood and grew concerned about the risks associated with artificial and harmful ingredients in her family’s skincare. Unable to find good products made from safe ingredients, she put her knowledge of chemistry, biology and aromatherapy to work and, after hours of research and experimentation, produced her first batch of soap. It was an immediate hit.
Today, after growing into their craft soaphouse and retail space on 5th Avenue, they continue to make their products by hand in small batches using time-honored methods. They have expanded their offerings from soap to a broad range of skin & body care, including beer soaps, body butters, and more.

The tour was an extensive one. At first, she showed us how she and her husband manage all of their countless engagements in engineering, business, and making. They also taught us about the fundamentals of making natural soap using traditional cold process methods with essential oil fragrances. The exciting part, for us, is when we get to engaged in the process of blending, pouring, and cutting soap bars as well. We even get to take a bar of soap home that they got to participate in the making of.
