24th Annual Culture Show 2023

The 24th Annual Culture Show: “Thả Diều” will be held on

Saturday, March 25th, 2023

Doors open: 6PM
Fawcett Center Conference Theater

The Vietnamese Student Association at The Ohio State University kindly presents our 24th Annual Culture Show: “Thả Diều.”

This year’s theme was inspired by the traditional kite festival that takes place in the Bá Dương Nội village in Hà Nội, Việt Nam ever since the Đinh Dynasty, dating back to the early 960s CE. It is a festival that is celebrated on the morning of the 15th day after Lunar New Year (the next full moon after Lunar New Year). Beforehand, handmade kites with bamboo flutes are made and flown showcasing the most beautiful colors and sounds that echo as each flute is played in unison with the wind, releasing a harmonious symphony in the sky. (reference)

Through all the obstacles that we have faced or are currently facing throughout the last few years from covid or from our personal battles, we as a community have overcome many adversities. Through all the love and loss, there is value in the things we choose to keep and in the hardships we choose to let go. This year’s theme, “Thả Diều” has a literal translation meaning “releasing a kite”. However, granted that we are deserving of a life we want to live, we will be taking on the figurative meaning of “releasing YOUR own kite” and letting go of the circumstances we cannot control. This year’s production: “Thả Diều” is a symbolization of releasing all of your worries as well as showcasing the traditional and contemporary sounds and visuals of Vietnam.
