Desalination Membrane

ESW is working with the Department
of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering
to design a new a experiment for their unit operations lab. Based around the principle of desalination known as Membrane Distillation, this method doesn’t depend on pressure differences to purify water, but on temperature differences. It is potentially a great alternative to reverse osmosis which requires a lot of electrical energy to run, whereas Membrane Distillation can operate mostly on waste heat produced by a factory. This project is using many different aspects of engineering such as: Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Systems Engineering, and other aspects of general design. This project is particularly interesting because it is more cutting edge and hopefully by integrating this process into the chemical engineering lab, Ohio State students can be on the forefront of water purification science and knowledge.
