About Us

We are a student-led organization at The Ohio State University College of Medicine dedicated to providing support, advice, and exposure to underrepresented high school students with interest in medical careers.

Philosophy

Preparation for medical school begins well before college when students when begin to develop skills, academic acumen, and experiences that prepare them for successful college matriculation. It is our goal to provide students with role models, exposure, and information that will help improve their college readiness and successful pursuit of medical careers.

Mentoring involves the direct, longitudinal guidance and support of the mentor to a mentee and should be individualized to meet the need of the mentee and mentors.

PROGRAM STRUCTURE

Mentees

Currently, mentees are students at Reynoldsburg High School who are traditionally underrepresented in medicine and have expressed interest in pursuing medical careers. Mentees will participate in on-site activities as well as campus visits to The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center where they will engage in educational and motivational activities to help strengthen their exposure to medicine.

Medical Student Mentors

Mentors are medical students at The Ohio State University College of Medicine. Mentors will check-in with mentees periodically to offer support and advice concerning their academic and medical goals.

Physician Leaders

Physician Leaders consist of medical faculty, fellows, and/or residents who will serve as mentors to small groups of high school students.

PROGRAMS

Medical Campus Visits

Students participate in hands-on and educational experiences at The Ohio State University Medical Center where they will be exposed to physicians in various fields of medicine.

High School/ On-Site Visits

Mentors and physician volunteers meet with students periodically to provide advice and educational discussions.

Outcomes

Our inaugural class in 2018 included 25 high school students at Reynoldsburg High School’s Health Science Academy with interest in medical professions. We look forward to increasing our participation with additional cohorts each year.

Through Mentor ME several of our students have been linked to programs at The Ohio State University to include the Mentoring in Medicine Day sponsored by the Office of Diversity and Inclusion at The College of Medicine and The Cancer Research Experience for the Advancement and Training of Emerging Scientists (CREATES) sponsored by the Center for Cancer Mentoring, Education, Leadership, and Oncology- related Training at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center.

We look forward to the continuing development and amazing future of our MDs to Be.
