Leon De Carril y Moreno and Stubner Essay Competitions

Since 2011, the University-wide Council of Latinx Organizations (UCLO) has sponsored two essay competitions annually to advance its mission of promoting and supporting Latinx Scholarship at the Ohio State University. The Leon de Carril and Moreno Essay Competition and the Stubner Essay Competition commemorate the determination, excellence, and perseverance necessary to earn one’s college degree.  These three individuals represent the first male and female Latin American graduates of The Ohio State University. This year, we are very excited to award three $1000 awards to three outstanding Latinx students who best showcase their #latinx@osu experience in a short written essay!We look forward to your submission! History

Pedro Leon de Carril and Teodoro Regino Moreno were the first male Latin American students to graduate from The Ohio State University. They both graduated from The Ohio State University in 1903 with Doctorates in Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Leon de Carril was from San Juan, Argentina and Dr. Moreno was from Corrientes, Argentina.

Emma Catherine Stubner was the first female Latin American student to graduate from Ohio State. She graduated in 1917 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. She was from Culebra, Panama.

These three individuals represent the first three Latino graduates, male and female, from The Ohio State University. It is in their honor and memory that UCLO has decided to name these essay competitions to serve as a reminder of the importance of graduation and academic attainment for Latinx Students.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the Leon de Carril and Moreno or the Stubner Essay Competitions the applicant must be a registered undergraduate student at the Ohio State University Main Campus. Furth
ermore, the applicant must have a cumulative GPA above a 3.0 and be in good standing with the university’s code of conduct.
The applicant must be willing to provide a short “Acceptance Speech” for winner announcements on UCLO’s social media accounts or a potential virtual announcement on IGTV.

Essay Questions – choose one and write a 1-page essay (approximately 500 words)

1. How did your experience during the COVID-19 pandemic impact you as a Latinx Student on Campus?   How did you tackle these challenges and what did you learn from the experience?

2. What are your hopes for the latinx community on campus during the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond?

3. How do you serve as an active ally to other communities on campus? Why is this important to you?
