RW-3 x1
The team’s return to conquer the Race to the Clouds
The name RW-3x seems as though it would be a bike that had a marginal improvement over RW-3, and although that was originally the plan, it turned into much, much more. RW-3 had many new challenges taken on by the team as they made their debut showing at Pike’s Peak International Hill Climb. Finishing 2nd in their class and 16th overall, the team wanted more.
RW-3x started as improvements to limiting factors in RW-3, but as design and implementation went on, it became a task of creating new designs instead on modified previous ones. What resulted was a new battery pack, a redesigned cooling system, and an adjustable offset suspension among other changes. As a result, powertrain temperatures were well beneath the limits over the entire course, and the bike delivered full power across the finish line. The battery pack stayed cool the entire time, and the bike crossed the line with around 10% charge left in the tank.
At the race, RW-3x was the fifth vehicle to go up the mountain in the morning. When on the course, the top section was very wet and muddy. The rider, Rob Barber, was running race slicks and could not push the bike hard in this technical and dangerous section of the course. Considering these environmental limitations, the bike satisfied many goals. It ran a time of 11:16 up the mountain, coming in 3rd in the electric motorcycle class and 14th overall.
