January 24th, 6:00 – 7:00PM : Endgames Lesson by Steve Charles

Chess Club’s very own Steve Charles, USCF rated 1827, taught a lesson to twenty four chess club members about several types of endgames. He included examples of his own games that he has won, lost or drawn, as well as some Grandmaster level games. The lesson was located in Smith Lab 1042, where we have been having our SP23 biweekly meetings.

January 15th, 11:00AM – 4:30PM : Rapid Tournament

Our very first tournament of the Spring 2023 semester was a blast! There were 18 players (including two younger children who were most certainly not members of the University) competing for a $45 prize. At the end of the day, our Treasurer Richard Karp, rated ~2000, took home the first place prize with a score of 5.0/5.0. Drew Smith came in second with a score of 4.0/5.0.

January 9th : Meet our new executive board members!

With such a fast-growing population and club vision, the executive board decided that it was time to add members to our team. Therefore, starting this semester, we would like you to welcome two new members to our executive board! The first is Richard Karp, who will be taking on the role of our club’s treasurer. The second is William Xiong, who will be taking on the role of our club’s secretary. If you want to learn more about them, head on over to our About Us tab!

October 23rd, 11:30AM – 3:00PM : Buckeyethon Day of Play Tournament

Halfway through the Fall 2022 semester, the Chess Club at the Ohio State partnered with Buckeyethon, the largest student organization at the Ohio State University. For Buckeyethon’s Day of Play, we hosted a 5-round Blitz tournament, with a U1600 section and an Open section. At the end of the day, Richard Karp, rated ~2000, took home the first place prize in the Open section, while Enoch Wang placed first in the U1600 section. Together, we raised money for Buckeyethon’s Dance Marathon, which fundraises every year to fight Children’s cancer.
