COLUMBUS, OH-Last Friday night, Ohio State student Stella P., 20, was invited to a surprise birthday party for one of her friends. Just as at many undergraduate social gatherings, Stella was asked to be part of a group picture.
“Unfortunately, there was a problem,” said fellow student Colin Y., 20. “Obviously for these group photos, we have to make sure that it doesn’t look like anyone is drinking. That way, we can still post the photos to facebook without our parents seeing the nature of our social habits, especially because many of us are under twenty one. It’s kinda one of those unspoken rules of the college social scene. But Stella forgot this rule at the time, and we ended up taking a photo together while she was still holding a beer. I’m honestly kind of embarrassed she forgot to put it down somewhere because she really should know this by now, she’s a third year. And, it’s a pretty important photo because it’s us with the birthday girl. We can’t just not post it on facebook. We just can’t.”
“I felt the same way,” replied Adam P., 20. “In retrospect, I’m surprised none of us remembered to tell her to set it down, but, as Colin was saying, it’s one of those things that no one should have to remind you about. We all remembered, and she should have taken the cue. Also, she was drinking natty ice, and I mean, would you honestly want to get photographed while drinking that?”
“I was hoping that I could just crop the beer out of the photo, but I really can’t do that without cutting two of my friends out of the photo, or making the photo really grainy,” Stella replied. “But we really had to post this on social media because it was Kristen’s birthday party! And you know, I wasn’t willing to post the picture with the beer in it and just….I don’t know, hope that my uncle or my pastor wouldn’t notice? Just too risky. So I ended up photoshopping my cat, Sampson, into the picture and put it online. I know it’s badly done, but I’m hoping that people will just find the bad-photoshop job funny and refrain from considering the possibility that I had actually been holding a beer in the original photo.”
Stella gave us the photo that she believed to be the solution to the problem and subsequently posted to social media, which we ultimately think was a reasonable move. Adam P. and Colin Y. both refrained from further commentary concerning the photo’s existence on social media in its present state.
