COLUMBUS – From Accounting to homelessness, Engineering to being an Engineer looking for work, there are countless opportunities awaiting students after they earn their degrees and are at least $70,000 in debt. After entering college in the Exploration Program, freshman Lily was unsure of which path she should take in college and the rest of her natural life. Far from being the only one in this situation, we interviewed Lily to get her perspective on this difficult choice. “Well, I absolutely love scrap-booking, but you can’t really make money doing that. I was totally stumped on what I should do – try to achieve and do good in the world, even though it might be hard? Or is it better to pick the safe route and have a happy life outside of my job?” Echoing the thoughts of many students, Lily smiled before telling us what she has decided to do. “I picked neither. I am getting a job that will leave me unfulfilled in terms of job satisfaction while also being so underpaid that my life outside of work will be hard and unfulfilling too.” This is what Lily’s English 1101 class called, “Achieving the American Dream.”
