As classes start back up again, students at The Ohio State University’s School of
Music are gearing up to start the semester off on a good note.
However, starting this semester, students in the school of music are now able to
enroll in the newest course, required for the Bachelor of Fine Arts in Music degree:
Ukulele.
Students who enrolled in the class expected to learn advanced chord progressions,
technique and music theory. Instead, students showed up to class on Tuesday and
were given a crash course on ‘How Not To Apologize on the Internet.’
This past Monday, Ohio State’s School of Music named ex-YouTuber, Colleen
Ballinger, the newest faculty member and the professor of all of the University’s
Ukulele courses.
Ballinger, once known online for portraying the character Miranda Sings, has been
hired by the University to teach the course after being “canceled” this past June for
creating a 10 Minute Ukulele video to combat allegations of grooming.
International student, Adam McIntyre, had this to say about Ballinger’s course.
“We didn’t learn any actual music. The entire 55 minute lecture was taken up with
her ranting about Toxic Gossip and her divorce. She literally stopped every time
she heard a train.”
While we have yet to have received a comment from the professor, students have
mentioned spotting Ballinger trying to befriend first-year students at Traditions,
playing ‘Toxic Gossip Train’ on her ukulele after being asked to leave Sloopy’s at
closing time and putting on Miranda Sings shows in the Oval after her tour had
been canceled.
University officials have not yet commented on Ballinger’s allegations, but they
have assured us that this course will make sure that all graduates avoid
“manipulation station.”
