The Ohio State Buckeyes will soon face off against arch-nemesis the Michigan Wolverines in the most-anticipated game of the season. Both teams have been racking up an impressive number of wins in the past few months, leaving fans unsure which team will ultimately emerge victorious. But one man claims that the upcoming game’s outcome was foretold over a thousand years ago.

Professor Henry Jones of Ohio State’s Archaeology Department recently returned from an expedition to Central America. He brought back numerous artifacts for study, including a giant stone disk inscribed with a Mayan prophecy dating from around 850 AD. Professor Jones invited the Sundial to view the relic.

“Thanks to the wonders of Google Translate, I’ve managed to produce an accurate English translation of the prophecy,” the Professor told us. “There are numerous references to the upcoming Michigan game. But as incredible as this discovery is, it isn’t unique. According to my research this isn’t the first time the Mayans have foreseen an Ohio State victory.”

“People thought a Mayan prophecy predicted that the world would end in 2012,” Professor Jones explains. “But actually it was all a big mistake. What it boiled down to was the mistranslation of a single word: bʼakʼtun, meaning ‘apocalypse.’ The word that actually appears in the prophecy is bʼaikʼtun, meaning ‘football.’ And what do you think of when you hear the words ‘football’ and ‘2012’? You see, the prophecy was really about the 2012 Ohio State vs Michigan game!”

As Ohio State fans well-know, the Buckeyes defeated the Wolverines in 2012. But was this merely a coincidence?

“I think not,” says Professor Jones. “Over a thousand years ago, the Mayans predicted Ohio State’s victory in the 2012 match. Furthermore, they’ve predicted our victory again this year. Let’s take a look at this new prophecy I’ve found. I’ve divided it into two stanzas…”

The first stanza, the Professor warns, is difficult to decipher. “In the year of twenty and twenty and two, in the fields of bʼaikʼtun…” Could this be a reference to the upcoming match?

Luckily, the second stanza is more straightforward. “…the Wolverine Tribe will be clobbered by the People of the Buckeye.”

So what do you think? Will the Buckeyes “clobber” the Michigan team? How much are you willing to bet (hint, hint)? Let us know on Twitter and Instagram (@TheSundialOSU)!
