Talk Title: Circuit-targeted neuromodulation across symptoms and disorders

Abstract: After decades of brain mapping research, the field is starting to converge on neuroanatomical targets for therapeutic brain stimulation. In September 2022, the FDA first cleared an fMRI-targeted neuromodulation technique for major depressive disorder. This raises the question of how to extend these approaches to patients with other disorders. A growing library of treatment targets is emerging thanks to the growth of causal brain mapping techniques, which are designed to map the circuitry connected to brain lesions or brain stimulation sites that modify a particular symptom. Here, I will describe the derivation and validation of various circuit-based treatment targeting approaches. These approaches can be used to tailor brain stimulation treatments to individual patients based on diagnoses/comorbidities, symptom profiles, psychometric findings, and personalized connectivity measurements. I will also present a framework for integrating these approaches into a novel subspecialty of image-guided psychiatry.
