Guest Presenter: Dr. Negar Fani (an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Emory University)
Talk Title: Targeting Problem Mechanisms in High-trauma Populations: Device-augmented Mindfulness and Neuromodulation.
Abstract:Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has heterogenous clinical and neurophysiological manifestations, reflecting diverse underlying mechanisms. Dr. Fani will discuss multimodal findings from her research with high trauma-exposed civilians, revealing mechanisms of dissociative, “shutting down” responses to trauma. She will discuss breaking new mechanistically-targeted interventions for both dissociative and fear-related trauma manifestations, including device-augmented breath focused mindfulness and a new, non-invasive deep-brain stimulation method—temporal interference—which can be flexibly applied to different PTSD populations.
